Verdict in Catholic parish sex assault case

I saw last week that a priest who used to live at St. Jerome's and a guy who had taught at the parish school were found guilty of molesting a kid there.

They are going to be sentenced in April, and could get a lot of time.

I don't know what to think about how many years they could get, or if they will get any.

What does everybody think about prison terms for these guys? One could go away for more than 50 years and the other for almost 40.

I'd rather see the lengthy terms go to the leadership that allowed and effectively encouraged their behavior.

Agree. We saw that, in a sense, last year when Monsignor Lynn was sentenced to three to six years after he was convicted of endangering children. DA had charged he had shielded priests he knew were molesters.

It's everywhere now , homosexual pedophile coaches, priest, teachers, abusing little boys. Very long jail time. The boys scouts had hidden documents also.

First, let me say that if you leave out homosexuals you are mainly on track. Pedophiles are not homosexual. They are in it to overpower the powerless. They are calculating in whom they choose to abuse. It is about time the people have awaken to the fact that you should call proper authorities in these cases & not your parish pastor or local hierarchy. Has anyone watched the HBO doc that ran this week?? High time some truths are spoken about how long, how horrendous, & how high up this problem really goes. It isn't just happening in Churches though as you point out, anywhere power/authority is allowed to build to certain extents as this, these pedo's find easy pickens. We place priests on pedestals & have paid a high price. They protect power at all costs. Let them all go to prison for a longggg time, & I hope they are scared to death!!!! Fear such as they placed into their victims for life. The court cases in Philly are only a beginning & we still see how they try to lie their way through their actions. Too sick! I did it, I didn't do it, I attempt suicide, I appeal, I didn't know, victims lie & use drugs, he went to school the next day...really?!? HE WAS A CHILD YOU COWARD LOSERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am a Catholic & Catholics do good works all over this world. Don't be down on the Church, which is the people. Watch this show & see how some people started to "speak up"

I wonder why most of these crimes are same sex abuse, very few are girls. We try to change facts by using words. Lets keep it politically correct so we won't offend anybody.

Oh, I think it happens to girls too. It is just handled differently in public & at church levels. Not so much shame perceived either, which is messed up! If a man rapes a boy it usually isn't thought of as statutory rape. Plus, Priests usually had more contact with the younger boy set-girls were not altar servers until fairly recently(by slow moving RC standards). Even now, they take a back seat to the way a male altar server is treated IMO. Women stay with women & the men do MENs jobs so to speak. Again, I don't think this is a Christian problem but more of a stand over from the Roman Empire part of this org. They took on so many Roman ways & this is what you get centuries later. It's called history & it is all connected(like a mob).

gov-if you are referring to the 2's down town, there has been some clean up there from what the papers say. Hopefully, someone with some real ba//s can make changes quickly. Though, the powerful will fight to the finish to keep it. Watch the film. It's worth it

No, there are all kinds of pedophiles I am sure-hetero, homo, bi whatever. I just HATE when the church & most people think that it can be blamed on only homosexuality as a way of cover-up. There are def gay men in the parishes, but a healthy homosexual looks for another adult for a relationship. Sexual abuse of children is totally something else. There are also straight men in the parishes, some of whom may keep a celibate life & some of whom do not. A healthy one would look for an adult female while a pedophile goes to a child who is defenseless whether male or female. Some homosexual males seem to be attracted to younger males as a "type", but those are usually late teens who already know they are homosexual also(twink i think). That is different than abusing a small child who knows nothing of a sexual nature. I just wanted to point out to the poster that it isn't a homosexual issue-that's what they want you to think though! This is a real slap to a group of folks who don't deserve it. Do you think Jerry Sandusky was gay? No, just a monster & that's just my opinion.

i don't think it was said that ALL gay men have sex with preteen boys. These are men attracted to the same sex, being around these boys they can't control their homosexual tendencies. The urge to have sex overpowers them. Ever wonder why it's forbidden for straight men to attend sleepovers with Girl Scouts?

U know this through experience? That's never happened to me. There's a big difference between prepubescent and adult for me and really most women don't look like women until at least 17. I don't buy it. They've studied homosexuality and pedophilia and the findings are at odds with what you say.

To the ? on what time they should get??? THROW the book at them-the Bible or whatever other book you choose

Clearly they didn't care, so maybe they can now be passed around the prison & feel powerless about it. So sorry if that's too snarky for some-they aren't my kind of Christian at all.

Lumping pedo's and gays togethor is just an effort by the christian right to be consistent w/ their outdated arguments about the dangers of gays adopting, teaching or being boy scout leaders. They've? Who is they've? No study I ever read is conclusive on homosexuality as far as what makes them attracted to the same sex. Pedophilia is sex with babies and pre teen children. I understand most of these kid are minors, the ones I heard of were 13 & 14 . So if a 18 yo had relations with a 15 yo would you call him a pedo.? I'm not saying some boys weren't younger. No not every gay guy likes younger boys.
