    Mayfair Civic Press Release

The Mayfair Holmesburg Thanksgiving Parade Committee is pleased to announce the 36th annual MH Thanksgiving Parade to be held on Sunday, November 18th, 2012 (Rain Date – Sunday, November 25th) from Noon to 3:0
0pm. The parade route will be along Frankford Ave.

The parade committee decided on the theme of "Neighborhood Unity" to celebrate the community and all of the local business who have been the financial backbone of our neighborhood. Parade committee member Peter McDermott states, "Many generations have come to "The Avenue" for this fun-filled family event each November whether they still live here, or have since moved away. It's a Northeast Philadelphia tradition."

Parade committee member, Donny Smith states "Since the parade route travels along three different neighborhoods, we found it only fitting to ask the Presidents of those the three neighboring Civic Associations to be our Grand Marshals this year." Lisa Greco, Mayfair Business Association member and another parade organizer also states, "We are honored to have Rich Frizell, President of the Holmesburg Civic Association, Joe DeFelice, President of the Mayfair Civic Association, and Mary Benussi, President of the Tacony Civic Association as our three Grand Marshals." Adds Kevin Leonard, "These three individuals do an outstanding job of uniting our neighborhoods behind common causes to protect the neighborhood, working to bring in projects or events that have a positive impact on our citizens, and are tirelessly dedicated to the betterment of the community. It's the dedication to their neighborhoods that inspired this year's theme."

As in past years, there will be an announcer and a stage set up at the intersection of Frankford and Cottman Avenues where participants will have the opportunity to perform for two to three minutes for the crowds. There is also an opportunity for the local community to enter in their own home made floats where there will be ribbons for the "Most Creative Float", "The Funniest Float", as well as "The Best Parade Themed Float". As always, children are encouraged to bring their letters to Santa to be collected by Santa's Elves at the end of the parade.

More information about the Mayfair Holmesburg Thanksgiving Parade can be found at Mayfair Holmesburg Thanksgiving Parade, by calling 215-624-6660 or emailing the parade committee at

We are very excited and have worked incredibly hard on this years parade. We think this is going to be one of the best ones ever!

Please remember that Silly String is strictly prohibited (it ruins uniforms, paint, etc) and please remain along the curb lines.

    WE NEED YOUR HELP!

If you see anyone using Silly String, please ask them to put it away, and please help us keep people out of the street. We totally understand everyone's excitement, however please remain along the curblines. Last year we actually had people wander as far out as the center line on Frankford avenue. Doing this slows down the pace of the parade and blocks participants. PLEASE stay back! If you are on Frankford ave, the parade WILL pass you - I promise!

Working together we can ensure that these parades continue along the ave for many years to come.

    Thank You!

One of my biggest pet peeves! Walking in the street, not the silly string. I'm not a fan of the silly string but the kids like it. I will never understand why adults think it's okay to move out and stand in front of kids.

The Silly String destroyed a Mummers costume a few years ago, and also some paint on an antique car, so we've been prohibiting it for years.

The Parade Committee honestly isn't big enough to keep the crowds along the curb, and that is why we are asking for your help.

    Help Us - Help You!
Together we can make this parade fun for everyone!

The parade was great as always...I tried to keep everyone back at the curb line...it was a losing battle...we did not buy any silly string though.

Please tell me why people need to bring their dogs to the parade?

We were camped out in front of the Dunkin' Donuts. There was a woman who just had to bring her large dog and it barked THE WHOLE DAMN TIME! She actually thought it was funny. But when the Lu Lu Temple guys came by, they were getting spooked by the barking dog. NOT funny!

Please--leave the dogs and silly string home!

And I just have to comment on how dirty Mayfair is looking. We parked on the 4000 block of Bleigh and there was loads of litter strewn all over the pavement on both sides of the street! This was before the Parade! Clean up people!

TWO of the things we hated too when we used to go to that parade. Thank Goodness neither happens as bad over here in Jersey.

We were right next to her! Dog kept wrapping itself around the parking meter next to my wife, trying to jump on her. And a lot of other people walking by with their dogs were setting this one off even more! I talked to her earlier, shared some storys about our new dog. But after a while it did start to get annoying... Shame the horses got stuck right at that spot for so long.

Also, along with keeping people off the street..What is up with the people, whole families in some cases, that HAVE to walk on the street side of the crowd to get to where ever it is they are going? They want to be seen like they are in the parade? Hey buddy, ever hear of a sidewalk?....

But over all, we had a good time there. Couldn't ask for better weather! The bands were sounding good, some of the dance groups were entertaining, the flow of the parade was better than in past years.
