Northeast Philly neighbors squawk after seeing bulldozed woods

I'm confused about some things. Why didn't they just keep the trees on the remaining 3 acres?

And does it seem odd to bulldoze trees, turn it into a meadow and then install a water treatment system underground?

Probably cuz they thought it would be easier to divert storm water into a meadow rather than a stand of trees. Who knows what stipulations were in the land swap deal.

Just seems weird to me that storm water policies are having the results of tearing down forests.

I mean the policies didn't result in tearing down the trees, the lack of ingenuity from whoever was the site engineer caused the trees to be torn down.

This is what we do at work. However, Having not seen the site I am really just generalizing, but there certainly could have been other ways to go about this, But we don't know all the factors...I wouldn't go blaming the stormwater regs for the trees being torn down. That's like blaming "development" for tearing down trees for a new subdivision. The demand for new houses didn't force the removal of trees, the developer just didn't want to be bothered with them or found them too expensive to work around.

Seems like what went on is that it was park land, but the PIDC got it years ago and it was ultimately slotted to be developable land, so yeah, it seems like no matter what, the trees were going to go away, whether it was for a storm water issue or buildings.

I'm going to guess that's the place? (Why can't the Inky link to maps online.) So was it the woods to the east of the current site on McNulty Rd?

The Usual Racketeering from City Council and Mayor Nutter.
David Tours and all those LOUD and SMELLY BUSES.

This is the funniest Crack of Sheet I read today.

Benedict said he was working with the Philadelphia Water Department to assure that "every drop of water on our property will be handled by a very sophisticated underground water-treatment system we're building. All of our buses are clean and green.

Impervious surface regs? Say, parcel is 5 acres, 2 acres are impervious (parking lot not letting water percolate through to soil) so the remaining 3 acres are to fix that [by law]. Likely that trees don't drain/absorb as much as a meadow can when also aided by evaporation. See it all the time in residential. It's easier to clear cut and start over than it is to build around trees.

Broad Street Media LLC - Grassroots protest

By this time next year, construction should be under way on a 12-foot-wide paved multi-use trail connecting the newly acquired parkland with the city-owned Junod Playground; the 32-acre, city-owned Poquessing Creek Park; and the 275-acre Benjamin Rush State Park. It will be open to hikers, joggers, bicyclists and equestrians and will cost about $600,000 to build...

Meanwhile, the David Tours expansion will not infringe upon the 300-foot buffer and will be about 400 feet from the nearest homes, PIDC’s Dalfo said. Benedict told residents at a public meeting yesterday that the lot will be about 600 feet from the nearest homes.

300 feet away or is that 400 feet away or maybe 600 feet away??

Default Don't be so afraid of change

The same thing happened a few years ago when the Houston meadow was cleared. Where are the naysayers now? The place is stunning - I highly recommend a visit. 100% forest isn't good. A mix of woodland and meadow is best for wildlife habitat. Have a little faith.

Too bad this wasn't out in the open just a year ago when O'Neill was opposed by Rubin.

I feel bad for the guy and his neighbors. I hope the expanded bus lot doesn't cause too much of an hindrance to their way of life. But, reading the article it sounds like the Parks commission gained a net benefit in this deal. A few neighbors were harmed, but hopefully the greater community will be better served. I had originally read about this in the Northeast Times. Either I just skimmed the article, or it wasn't mentioned. But, I didn't realize O'Neil had been so lax in doing his job. That is disappointing to read.

The City Planning Commission, the Fairmont Park Commission and City Council all held public hearings about the swap in 2003 and approved it, according to Councilman Brian O’Neill, whose district includes the industrial park and the neighborhood.

I'm still waiting on some sort of citation noting that this actually happened because it's a mighty large accusation you're making.

I am making a medical accusation and what do you intend to do?
Asthma might be exacerbated by BUS FUMES.
Loud nosies might cause fear and panic attacks in young children.

    AND I QUOTE:

Benedict said he was working with the Philadelphia Water Department to assure that "every drop of water on our property will be handled by a very sophisticated underground water-treatment system we're building. All of our buses are clean and green.

FURTHER THE DESIGN OF THESE BUSES ARE DEFINED AS "GREEN BUSES" By Mr. Benedict

Now under further reading I read from the David Thomas Website:

Our 48 Passenger School Buses - Our school buses are the newest models holding 48 passengers (two to a seat) or 72 children (three to a seat). All buses are equipped with AM/FM Stereo Cassette (or CD) Player.

BINGO: Buses with ancient AM and FM plus Cassette players and have been identified as new GREEN BUSES?
    Members of the Jury:
"No way, the buses have diesel engines and emit noxious fumes, their buses are NOT GREEN.
Plus they make a lot of Noise.
I submit as scientific evidence Exhaust tests and noise tests results.
