Making Pedestrian Oriented Avenues The Future For Lower Northeast | Hidden City Philadelphia

Text message based surveys facilitated by Code for America revealed that a vast majority of respondents would utilize rapid transit service to Center City.![]()

First of all and mainly there is more than adequate transportation in Philadelphia.
Report tells you The City has no finance schemes to build up locations with I may add 50% of the stores are empty.
This plan is for the year 2040's.
Look at the picture of the row homes that have the two store fronts built in front later.
The sun never shines and the concrete is mildew, broke and black. THIS IS POOR DESIGN.
See the photo in their report. (These buildings were altered long ago to meet changing market conditions)
The report does not tell you that the census details that the population of Philadelphia is about 1.5 Million.
And the population of the City is slowly declining.
Our City is stagnate and the City and State workers that approach retirement need an increase stream of revenue to pay for their pensions and benefits. The US economy is growing too slow to support the politicians lavish lifestyles.
The rich do not pay any taxes. Look at Mitt Romney he is in the 13% tax bracket. The Burden is on the Middle Class.
Inflation could start to run up as the economy slowly declines.
Medical care is the next item to be cut. When I am at the age of retirement Medicare will be almost nonexistent. City Planning commission should be doing traffic studies to increase movement on our roads for the cars.
I DO NOT believe that people want to ride buses and bicycles.
The report is total nonsense. I know I live here my father owned convention center land before the center was built.
If you ever read City council pinks you know that they locked up the city without helping the citizens of the city.
Council selected NUTTER and SANCHEZ they did not give voters the choice.
The planning commission is another dream for the future with cars that fly and space stations on MARS.
I wish we could do better but most of our politicians are mediocre at best.
The report is utter nonsense.

The Philadelphia City Planning Commission PCPC is an "IVORY TOWER".
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
The term Ivory Tower originates in the Biblical Song of Solomon (7,4), and was later used as an epithet for Mary.
From the 19th century it has been used to designate a world or atmosphere where intellectuals engage in pursuits that are disconnected from the practical concerns of everyday life. As such, it usually carries pejorative connotations of a willful disconnect from the everyday world; esoteric, over-specialized, or even useless research; and academic elitism, if not outright condescension. In American English usage it is a shorthand for academia or the university, particularly departments of the humanities.

The plan seems to make sense to me. You take the good bones of the neighborhoods and their connectivity to Center City but try to also add better walkability in the neighborhoods. I am not sure what would be so problematic about that.
The Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corporation would like to stay out of this conversation, I imagine.

I was just reading about the proposed greenway planned for the Frankford Creek as part of the "Lower Northeast District Plan." Check out these cool pics and the article here.

Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain and most fools do.
How to become filthy rich in Philly?
I want to personally Thank PCDC for the convention center plans and their land purchases and relocation funds.
I Remember one guys brag of a $120,000 check to relocate his business out of the convention center site and all the entrepreneur had at his business was a single pinball machine!
And to add insult to injury he moved his business to NJ!
The Greatest PCDC planning for the biggest failed convention center in the USA.
Now, everyone on this board, go over and do a land purchase before the PCDC starts the buy out.
This is like taking candy from a babe. sweeeet
Nutters Greenest City in the Country is predicated on the purchase of this fabricated waterway.
IVORY TOWER.

Interesting. I wonder how successful they will be in really making that part of the city pedestrian and bike friendly. It's the great drawback of the Northeast, one which prevents all other positive change IMO.
And man, how the hell did they get the zoning for those shops? That second picture in the Hidden City article is just depressing.

Really? Having lived in the NE for much of my life, I can attest to the fact the the Lower NE is indeed walkable, and bike-able. If you add in a few more spots that want to make you walk around, it's quite livable. The Lower NE is laid out much like parts of S. Philly and other areas, but with wider streets, some lawn frontage and more trees. If you look at the N-S streets such as Rising Sun Ave; Castor Ave; Bustleton Ave and on the other side of the Boulevard, streets such as Frankford and Torresdale Avenues, you will find streets that had always been 'main streets' that had a number of stores that made it easy for people to live there like butchers, bakers, fruit vendors and the like. When the malls and giant supermarkets came about, it sort of killed the viability of many of the small stores that made living easier. You could and still can live in the Lower NE without a car.

"City Planning commission should be doing traffic studies to increase movement on our roads for the cars." I totally agree with this statement. Nutters green city has done nothing but cause more carbon due to traffic jams, cutting 2 lane streets down to 1, you may see 3 or 4 bikes ride by as you sit in traffic for 6 blocks. Trolly cars are another major problem, on any day you may have 2 blocks of cars & trucks backed up idling as this obsolete vehicle putters up the road. IMO, the GREEN agenda is a load of nonsense.
lol, oh that is rich....You do know those "Trolly cars" carry more people then cars thus reduces traffic jams, as if each person on the trolley isn't in a individual car, thus making less traffic.
Sorry cant do anything about speed(Trolleys are not slow or obsolete as you state) unless its a underground or in its own row.
