    Default food

I'm looking to move away from buying the chicken sold in the grocery store. I would like my 4 year old daughter (as well as my husband and myself) to NOT be exposed to all of the hormones, antibiotics, and irradiation that is typical (and more affordable) at the food store. It was suggested that I talk to the butcher on Cottman. Any other suggestions? I grow what few veggies I can, but need to find another source of locally and organically grown fruits, veggies, and grains. I do what I can, however it tends to be much pricier than the usual produce stands. Does anyone know of a a produce market (aside from Greensgrow and Reading Terminal) that sells organic produce (and poultry)? ANy recommendations are appreciated!

I've been in a couple of Shop Rite's before where I've seen poultry marked as being totally organic.

I prefer inorganic chicken, you know, without carbon in it.

    irradiation
You know that unless the chicken contains decaying elements emitting radiation (which is not what irradiated means), that's kind of a silly thing to worry about.

The hormones are meh, I'm pretty sure my body knows the difference between chicken and human hormones, and that hydrochloric acid in my stomach breaks it down to proteins anyway.

Antibiotics, well we use too many of these as it is, but they're not harmful in and of themselves, but in that overuse contributes to drug-resistant bacteria.

    Hi,
you can try the amish market up on cottman ave. it is on the side right before you hit Toys R Us. I haven't been there in a while, but they have great produce & also meats & baked goods.
    good luck!

Try the amish. You may have to go to Chester County or you can go to Bristol, pa. The Bristol one is behind Super Wawa on 13. The only thing is they're opened like 3 days a week but the place does business.

They might have moved out. I recall that Lowes wants to go in there.

You can try phillycowshare.com for beef. I haven't tried it personally, but I have been meaning to.

I heard that there is going to be a farmers market starting up at Wissanoming Park but I am not sure of the date yet... most farmers use GMO seed these days... so it will probably be local but not organic.

Please update if you find some good poultry! I am on a similar quest and have started growing veggies and making my own bread. I the fall, I am going to try my hand at cheese making.

I buy this chicken at Weavers Way Coop in NW Philly. There is a search on their webpage.

Thanks for the suggestions! I went to the Dutch Market on Cottman yesterday. Yes, it is still open and the prices aren't bad!

Do you work in Center CIty? If so, there is a Whole Foods and Trader Joe's that sells pretty good, clean meat.

I have started buying Reddington Farms chicken at Shoprite. It is owned by Shoprite, but the chickens are never given antibiotics but I don't think organic. It also says they are "humanely raised" but that could mean anything.

I'm disappointed that you didn't suggest pizza. After all, you worked at, and have been fired from, most of the shops in eastern PA now haven't you? Therefore, you would know what's good.

If you're really adventurous, you can buy live poultry at this Asian market at 6202 Oxford Avenue. It doesn't get any more organic than that!
