My young friend, I was 14 in 1967 and remember it vividly. I worked at the Lincoln Drive in Theatre cleaning the field in the day time, which is now the Interplex. Where the Radisson is, was a trailer village. I remember one had a de-stunk pet skunk on a leash in the yard. Further up Old Lincoln Highway was Hiway Pools with the ten foot high-dive, and Petroupoli's market. Across the highway, where the Neshaminy Motor Inn is now, were the "Blue Light Cabins", and next door which is now Suds beer store, was Krispy Kreme Donuts. I worked there also. You know that concrete island where Old Lincoln Highway merges with New Lincoln Highway? It used to have a hot dog stand on it, "Jack Vogel's hot dogs". Busses were a quarter and transfers a nickel.

The drive in movie was put up in 1948 and taken down in the 80s some time while I was out of town.

If you go back before the drive in, it was Liberty Bell Trailer Village in 1941. If you go back further, it was Ridge Farm Camp. The Ridges had parcels of land all over the area. You can check that out in historicmapworks(dot)com and enter bensalem in the search window. Going back to the late 1800s there was the Blue Spruce Inn, but I don't know which side of Lincoln Highway it was on. I've been asking old geasers in nursing homes but they're so old they forget. You may also be able to google Brian Butko's book about the Lincoln Highway for more information. Good luck with this.

YOU WORKED AT THE DONUT PLACE?
    That Krispy Kreme Donut place.
Did you ever see any customers with yellow fingers that never stopped smoking? :0
My wife worked at an institution across from Byberry Mental Institute called Woodhaven Center.
All the crazies would escape Byberry and walk over to KK for coffee and cigarettes.
I use to see Crazies drink coffee and never stop smoking cigarettes at KK.
My wife worked at Woodhaven and used the medical services at Byberry for the low functioning people across the Street.
Woodhaven Center later took over one of the buildings at Byberry Mental Institute.
That is why I never walked into Krispy Kreme. The crazies hang out.

She worked for free to earn a Psych degree and then was hired FT and left in '83
It was dangerous at Woodhaven. You had to watch your back.
Ask your father if he remembers Ruby Evans she broke my wifes finger.
And my wife was not allowed to touch her.

He passed away in 88, but she may have remembered him. His name was George and was a painter who had a stroke at 18 and was still able to get married and raise a family with 7 kids. Don't make them like that anymore

One supervisors named was George. Tall skinny Black dude. Real nice guy.
But, George is a common name.
Roman, Slim, Graham, George, Elanor, John Graves they all use to drink at the Old Ale House next to Wawa on pay day.

You know, Bixbite, not all of the "crazies" were aggressive. Anyone can go crazy. A lot of nice, innocent, passive people were at Byberry. They are now in group homes; various houses in places like Levittown, housing three or four apiece.

One of the good things about Pa. is that it takes good care of its mentally challenged.

Yeah I worked at Krispy at night under Mr. Brumsey while I was finishing high school in the daytime. I worked in the back, though. Not much contact with the people who came into the front.

It's a shame they knocked down Ye Olde Ale House. But, the same boring thing is going on in Oakland and San Francisco. I split from Philly from the early 70s to the late 90s, and all three of these were different cities by the time I got back.

Bixbyte, I realize you have total understanding about the range of people in your wife's care. I appreciate your experience. Rhawnhurst has seen changes since I recuperated from a motorcyle wreck at Nazareth in 1969. My father used to deliver Abbott's milk to that neighborhood in the early sixties. Somewhere near you at Bustleton near Bleigh is a delicious pizza place. Thin crust, pepperoni, soaking in olive oil.

    Very true.
Anyone traveling on Rt 1 got a free show. That went on for years. I'll admit it was funny, passing by there as a kid.

I remember there were three movie drive ins -
    Route 1 Neshaminy,
Next to Oxford Valley Mall drive in at the right of the loop to enter the Mall and
The Tacony-Palmyra Bridge Movie drive in on the Jersey Side.

I guess your dad drove by real fast when you were a kid sitting in the back seat of the car?

    __________________________________________________ ___________

I was thinking about Woodhaven Center that is still across from Byberry.
They did and continue to do numerous illegal activities to residents of Philadelphia.
Like transporting a dangerous crazy person that lived in West Virginia and placing him as a resident at Woodhaven Center.
He would growl and if you turned your back on him he would try to kill you.
They had to have him one on one watch 3 shifts one person looking at him eye to eye 24/7.
He use to attack the residents and staff before they put him on one on one watch.
How did they allow this crazy person from WV into Philadelphia?
    We paid all his bills.
Then there was this guy that use to walk away all the time.
He was hit by a car on I-95.
His family sued Woodhaven center and won $100,000s and never visited their son.
Like you said there may have been innocent people stranded at this center.
But there were also many very dangerous people that probably raped or killed innocent people on or off the premises.
The place is still open. I think Woodhaven is what is left of Byberry.
Transporting out of state people to Byberry and Woodhaven sounds illegal but done for 50 years.
Then integrating them into our neighborhoods in Philadelphia with non profit Group Homes run by the State of Pennsylvania or City of Philly funds?
The problem is the STATE of PA pay no Property taxes for Group Homes.
SO, our property taxes go higher to pay for their tax free status.
Therefore, The State of PA does not reimburse the City for this inequality.
Most of these innocent passive, crazy or dysfunctional people did not all come from Philadelphia.
PATH runs all the Group Homes with Sate or City Funds our TAX MONEY.
THEY waste that money from hell to high waters.
Like all the group homes have their carpets cleaned every month and then after one year they install all new carpets. Look at the lawn care. They have the nicest lawns in Philadelphia and we pay for the care of lawns for 5 people dysfunctional live ins per house plus 24/7 staff workers.
Some of the people working at PATH steal the money too.
They should all be investigated by examine PATH EMPLOYEE bank accounts.
I have seen some staff members shop with their clients off group home sites since the policy is that dysfunctional are entitled to live normal lives and shop with their PATH worker.
They might buy things with the money allowances and I believe they there are good opportunities to steal from them by actually shopping using the dysfunctional monies for yourself.
Many dysfunctional people are of low IQ and do not know if you are stealing from them.
So, PATH might be a big racket for theft and fraud.
But on the other side of the equation many employees at PATH help people and are honest.
There is no one watching them since there supervisors talk exactly like they are peers.
I only know this from my wife working at Woodhaven and a Judge directed that the clients be moved to a group home environment.
    The stealing should be investigated.
There is no third independent party watching for the theft or misuse of funds for carpets, roofs, maintenance, or theft of clients food, clothes and or living expenses.
LOOK at all the buildings that are owned by PATH that are tax exempt and we pay all property taxes with our property taxes so if they are to be integrated into society they should also pay their own property taxes.
MY OPINION, this place has potential for huge fraud.
I am a pissed off Old Dinosaur.

Bixbyte, I appreciate the information about the crossing of state lines with bureaucracy dependent people. It reminds me of back in the 70s when New York City started giving unemployable welfare recipients one-way bus tickets to San Francisco just to get rid of them.

My sister may have known your wife. I sent to you a private message, you can access it in "Notifications", in that redbrick bar at the top of the page, just to the right of where it says

    Did they have hour rentals?
I think I recall a sign at one of these "hotels" with a sign that rented per hour.

I remember my fiance and I going to the Lincoln with a bunch of other people for one of those half drunk, stoned " yeah, let's do this bizzare thing for a laugh" things kids did when the booze and pot were plentiful and everyone was looking the other way... we came in while a 40 foot high phallus was doing it's thing on screen.... and a bunch of young men in and on various cars..... and walking around in the parking lot.... sitting on hoods... well, a lot of THEM were doing their thing too. Needless to say this caused a lot of shrieking and laughter from the girls in our group, as well as smart ass comments from the guys.. We were all like 17 -21. The ground around that site contains more human DNA than the genome project storage room....
