This one is wild! It's "Miss Edison, 1958" and painted on a door in a pitch-black room located under the stage in the auditorium.

Yes, that's a beautiful, embossed tin ceiling under the fiberglass drop-ceiling panels.

Sounds just like Philly, blow up the historical building and leave the rest of the numerous abandoned and boarded up buildings on those very same blocks of Lehigh Ave. up. I just don't get it anymore. They really couldn't re-purpose this building as something? Oh well. Thanks for the great pics!

It wasn't "blown up." It was gutted by fire a couple of years ago. Rebuilding it after the fire would simply cost too much.

They were built to last those old public school buildings. Lots of wear and tear expected from decades of kids' use. This is a great photo archive treasure. Too bad you can't get access to some of the other buildings still standing by the architect Lloyd Titus and take some photos that might show some similar designs or off the shelf industrial products like tin ceilings from the beginning of the twentieth century in Philly. That would make a great Coffee Table Book. I grew up across the street from George L. Horn School at Frankford and Castor. That kind of architecture is substantial. Thanks for the photos. Great stuff.

There is nothing to rebuild. It would cost less since there is less to demo and move out inside ironically. They would have gutted everything but the masonry shell anyway, which was as strong as the day it was built, the fire was just another excuse to demolish it by a greedy developer.

Yet on August 3, 2011, the school caught fire and the upper floors were completely burned out. Nothing short of a total gut-renovation could make it fit for reuse. The school, most recently known as the Julia DeBurgos Middle Magnet School, had been closed two years before the conflagration. Because it was not properly sealed, the old school became a magnet for squatters, drug-addicts, and vandals, and quickly fell into ruin. The four-alarm fire, possibly the result of arson, was the coup de grace.

Please tell me they're doing something with the gargoyles...
