I think that regardless if there was a can on the ground, if a man twice the size and weight of a woman his hit with that much force, most times she'll drop. Either way the force wasn't appropriate.

Police union plans party for cop fired after punching woman
The police union will fete the 19-year veteran with a $30-per-person benefit Oct. 28. "Come On Out and Support ONE OF OUR OWN" reads a flier inviting officers to the five-hour, Sunday-afternoon event at the FOP Hall on Spring Garden near Broad. Proceeds will help Josey with living expenses, because he no longer gets a paycheck, FOP President John McNesby said
Retired Philadelphia police Capt. Ray Lewis, who has been caught up in a dispute with the FOP sparked by his involvement with the Occupy Wall Street movement, called the benefit "unbelievable, but it's no surprise."
Lewis, a 24-year veteran with no blemishes on his record, enraged the FOP last year by wearing his uniform to Occupy protests in Philly and New York. McNesby called for his arrest and filed a grievance that could have resulted in his ouster from the union.
"It's a shame. Here you have this guy caught on video sucker- punching this woman and the FOP is going to stand by him," Lewis said.
But McNesby blasted any suggestion that the benefit is inappropriate.
I don't feel bad for the man. Not only was he a big-ass dude knocking out some frail little women instead of just slapping her in cuffs, but people are afraid of physically defending themselves against cops because then it's Assault on a Police Officer. You're better off playing dead.
I'd still like one of the board badge sniffers to explain why he didn't just put her in cuffs. I saw a bouncer pick up a girl last night under the armpits, carry her 30 ft, and put her down on the sidewalk like it was nothing. Imagine if everyone with any kind of authority just went around sucker punching females.
Good luck with that. Some folks believe in absolute law and order and any deviant behavior should be met with a vicious ass whooping, no matter the offense. I was actually suprised how some of the females actually defended the officer.officer. I thought the officer over reacted but what made it worst was that he hit a WOMAN. I don't know about you but any man who hits a woman is worst than scum and anybody who defends it is even worst than the offender. You wouldn't think it was 2012.
I can't believe they're actually doing this. But McNesby blasted any suggestion that the benefit is inappropriate.
"It was inappropriate for the city to apologize to this woman and drop the charges until the investigation was complete," McNesby said. "And we still don't believe it's a fireable offense."
Throwing a party for a cop who punched a woman from behind. That's classy!
I predict all the news channels hanging out at this fundraiser and putting another big, embarassing spotlight on Philadelphia. All the news outlets from around the country that carried this story in the first place will now do an update: "Philadelphia Police celebrate the cowardly actions of one of their own."
I hope they get good pictures of all the cops who walk into that building. Any one of them with any decency will stay home.
To the Firefighters union and DC33-

I don't generally respond to carnival barkers, but I'll make an exception. The bouncer at my local bar is just a nice unassuming humble guy trying to earn some extra money and the one I saw last night was probably a college kid who handled a slapping and flailing female with more respect and maturity than a 40 year old police officer dealt with a woman retreating from him.

Cop Accused of Tasering Teen Friends With Lt. Who Hit Woman | NBC 10 Philadelphia
Teen-Tasering cop friends with woman-punching cop?
It turns out the two officers are friends, and have known each other for 30 years, according to Parham. Parham revealed this while speaking with NBC10 after his court appearance on Monday. The former Colwyn Borough Police Officer is accused of tasering a handcuffed teen prisoner.
Both men also have similar extracurricular activities. Josey runs a production company, "Brothers In Blue," and played a detective in the 2011 movie "Operation: Get Rid of Pinky," a gym instructor in the 2010 movie "Sure Looks Good" and a lawyer in the 2011 movie "Love and Litigation," according to his IMDB profile. Parham is a filmmaker who can be seen in the below video.
What does this mean? Absolutely nothing, except to the most devout conspiracy theorists. But that's never stopped us before.
The Philly FOP is planning to hold a $30-a-head party at its headquarters this month to support Josey. No word on whether Parham can expect a similar celebration in Delco ... or whether he also has a nipple ring.
Josey to be charged.

Seth Williams has one of the deadliest city's around but he finds time for this. I wonder who voted for this guy?
The seconds-long video clearly shows former Philadelphia Police Lt. Jonathan Josey stride after Aida Guzman during a chaotic incident at a street party after last September's Puerto Rican Day parade.
And it clearly shows Josey, a 40-year-old decorated 19-year veteran of the department, swing at Guzman and the 40-year-old mother of three fall to the ground.
But was it an assault or a misguided attempt by Josey to knock an open beer bottle out of Guzman's hand after members of the crowd threw glass beer bottles at police?
What appeared clear enough to charge Josey with simple assault, and for Police Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey to fire him, was not enough for Philadelphia Municipal Court Judge Patrick F. Dugan.
Saying he "needed more time to digest this," Dugan said he would announce his verdict on Feb. 26.
Dugan's announcement after a three-hour nonjury trial, brought groans and sighs from a courtroom packed to standing with police officers, many in the distinctive leather the elite Highway Patrol where Josey was a lieutenant.

The End
Certainly not the outcome I expected
Officer acquitted of Puerto Rican Day parade assaultTriggering a deafening eruption of cheers from a courtroom packed with scores of Philadelphia police, a city judge this morning found ex-police Lt. Jonathan Josey not guilty of simple assault for swinging at and decking a woman during an unruly street party after last year's Puerto Rican Parade.
Municipal Court Judge Patrick F. Dugan said he remained troubled by Josey's conduct on the 10-second video that shows Josey hit Aida Guzman from behind and knock her to the ground during the Sept. 30 incident at Fifth Street and Lehigh Avenue in the Fairhill section of North Philadelphia.
Dugan, however, cited Josey's testimony that the 19-year decorated police veteran was trying to swipe a beer bottle from Guzman's hand and accidentally hit her. Josey said he acted in the context of an escalating melee in which some spectators were throwing beer bottles at police trying to arrest a driver doing "donuts" in the middle of the intersection.
Dan Rather wrote a book 'The Camera Never Blinks'. Well, today, the camera did blink.
Not surprising in this city. Does this mean that he can fight to get his job back?
sorry I'm a bit of a novice on law - why did he get this type of trial where the judge makes the verdict instead of a jury?
