Default Car chase should have been called off !!!!

This pursuit should have been called off after 5 minutes, we all know the risk of innocent bystanders getting killed !! A soul could have been saved !!

Phila. man faces murder charge after deadly chase - Philly.com

Police said Gregory Alston, 39, of the 4500 block of Fernhill Street - a convicted felon with 21 prior arrests, including for attempted murder, weapons and escape - was behind the wheel.

Alston sped off, police said, beginning a 15-minute pursuit through six neighborhoods during which he drove on the wrong side of Broad Street and pedestrians had to jump out of the way. It ended when Alston, driving east on a westbound street, smashed into a 1995 Honda Accord at 10th and Ontario Streets.

A man in the passenger seat of the Accord, whom police had not yet identified, was pronounced dead at the scene. The car's driver, a 26-year-old woman, was is in critical condition at Temple University Hospital, police said. The 4-year-old was in critical condition at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, suffering head trauma but expected to survive.

yeah i thought of that too. It's a judgement call. If they hadn't pursued and he stopped the car, calmly went over and killed someone there would be judgement because they didn't chase him.

Why was this scumbag ever allowed out of prison in the first place?
If you believe people should work till they die to pay for a government worker to retire at 50, you're a Democrat. Otherwise, you're a Republican. All other differences between the parties are trivial.

I've akways advocated for non lethal measures to apprehend suspects. I wish they make some sort of compact emp device for situations like this.

    Like what?

What do all of the 20/20, backseat, know-it-all, but never been in the situation wannabes propose for these situations?

Suspects already push limits more than they ever have because there are limited consequences to their behaviors. Just let the phucquers do whatever they want?

I don't know what ur problem is, but i wasn't criticizing the police. You need to calm down with all that co signing u do as it concerns the police. My point was that i wished that there was a device that could've cut the car off before the suspect was able to take them on a chase. Sheesh. Just because i comment on a thread about the police, doesn't mean I'm monday morning quater backing.

If u read my entire post u would've seen the comment about an emp device, even if it is a long shot. Hopefully when all cars are computerized we won't have accidents like this.

Actually, it's less about your post, although I wonder what could be created, than it is about the tone of the thread, particularly Gio's.

Why would you sweat Gio? She's in the same category as Ecochuck, anthjohn, Nick the Cage, etc.

She's so far off the reservation that she's like spam.

The perp pointed at a cop and you're trying to make a case that PPD should have given up chasing.

Sorry, that's now how it works in Philly. You can be arrested 60 times but when you pull a serious threat on a cop, it won't be roses and red carpet for you.

P.S. I wonder if Greg Alston is related to Al Alston, the crazy Brewerytown/Sharswood/Francisville anti-gentrification nut.

Why don't the Philadelphia Police purchase some drones? I understand the cost is down to about $40,000 each. Other major
police departments are beginning to use them.

Yes - the city should publish a policy. "We will only chase you for 5 minutes, after such time, we will give up the chase and hope we can catch after your next criminal act."

    That should work.

When innocent people get hurt by bad people doing bad things, its not the fault of the good people trying to get them off the street. Its the fault of the bad people.

If anyone should get sued it should be the owner of that car. Who thinks the perp is the owner of record of that car? A car is a deadly weapon and if you lend it to a sociopath and they kill someone with it, you're liable.

When will PA increase its minimum liability requirements? Who thinks that $15k/$30k makes sense in this day and age? I hope the owner of the other car had UIM. You've gotta have it in this city, and unfortunately you can't enter an intersection until you see that it's clear; I slow down as I approach intersections to make sure there are no crazies out.

I know Onstar has the ability to turn cars off and on and I believe that when u buy a used car and owe payments, they can shut ur car off. I guess the main issue would be the time factor. The time it takes to gather the info, someone could've been killed.

I saw something mentiones about a helicopter. Even the helicopter was the only thing pursuing the guy, wouldn't he still know I that he was being followed? After he showed the weapon, he. was dangerous and they couldn't let him go. It's just tragic that the wrong person lost his life. Hopefully they'll throw the book at him.

The first cop got a nice kick in. If I watch it over and over again, it's almost like the perp gets what he deserves.

I personally didn't see the need for the officer to jump kick the guy. He clearly was giving himself up at the time but I get the feeling that if the suspect was beaten with batons, that people would've cheered. Regardless of how we feel avout his crime, we're perceived no better when we cheer at people getting beat up. That makes u look as bad as the people in the ghetto that people attribute the same behavior.
