I was just in AC right next to the Revel.

From the street, it's not clear what exactly the Revel building is. It's a big glass box with a golf ball on top. You have to get really close to it to find out it is the new $2.4 billion casino that has been in the news. Conversely when the billion dollar plus Borgata opened, there was no mistaking what it was, even from all the way across town.

From the boardwalk on a Friday afternoon, the Revel didn't entice me to go inside. Meh. I couldn't be bothered. At the moment there is no energy at ground level, this may be because those spaces aren't leased yet.

It's a nice looking building all right but it lacks pizazz to lure people in.
At night, the giant golf ball lights up, but it many of the pixels seem to be out already.

I was in the Revel a few weeks ago on a Saturday afternoon, and there is a ton of retail space that has not been leased in the Revel yet. The pool area was jammed though.

Related, I was shocked at how much of the retail space in "The Pier" is empty. Especially in the supposed high end second floor.

yeah, this casino is way upmarket for AC. it should be in a big city with other things going on, to take advantage of network effects and reel in the top dollars needed. I wish AC was that place, but it's obviously not.. and now it's hurting because the retirees which are the main market in AC, are happy to give their money away at more local gambling halls in PA.

The other thing I noticed while in AC is that have pretty much leveled everything from the boardwalk westward for three blocks to create casino superblocks or vacant lot superblocks. There really is no city left there. Any of the things that make cities interesting, desirable and fun have been demolished. Wandering the indoor cavern that is the French Quarter complex at one the casinos (Trop?) doesn't equate.

We saw this here in Philly on Market Street where the Science Center removed several streets to create superblocks of blandness. They seem to be working to fix that these days. The Science Center stretch is much more interesting and vibrant now.

I think that the powers that be in AC do recognize that they have lost the old lady slot machine demographic to the PA casinos, and that they need to refocus on making making Atlantic City more like Las Vegas. The Revel might seem to upmarket now, but I think that is what they need to focus on if they have any chance of staying competitive.

Its a shame Revel wasn't built on Del. Ave. That would have been sweet.

    indeed.

meanwhile, the smallest casino in PA, built on the cheap, is collecting the biggest revenues among its peers. can you imagine what something nicer could do?

Hopefully they don't default on their bond before the rest gets there.

I was under the impression that the construction work on the beach is not related to the casino, but was being done to prevent beach erosion-- there was an NPR story about such a project happening in Atlantic City.

Can't find that particular story but there are plenty others:

Atlantic City Closes Some Beaches After Massive Erosion « CBS Philly

Erosion Shuts Down Atlantic City Beaches | NBC 10 Philadelphia

In the second link (from NBC), you can see the Revel casino right behind.

The casino itself looked pretty much finished, at least to my eye.

The Pier is done. It's beyond bankrupt and can't even sell at a distressed auction. Market currently values it at just 12% of it's value of five years ago: NJ.com : Pier Shops at Caesars in Atlantic City has trouble finding a buyer

    AC = Loserville

Lacks any of the "class" or "sex appeal" (and I use those terms loosely here) of Vegas. As such, it attracts a cheesy crowd.

lol, even tho the ads and such say otherwise, AC is fighting a uphill battle with finding itself in the 21 century without becoming a beach town:

Seems like it is getting destroyed by the outlet shopping too. The mall was pretty dead on Saturday, meanwhile people were waiting in a line to get into the coach store (which is insane).

I actually have pretty fond memories of the pier from when I was a kid and it was called ocean one. They used to have a really good arcade

A few weeks ago I realized I forgot my Apple charger cord for the shore house. The Apple store in the Pier was the closest option, so we shot over for a quick purchase. Wow, that place IS done - it was pretty sad to see as we walked through. Damn shame, as I think the space is really cool.
