Default Atlantic City, NJ Police Officer Dies in Handgun Mishap

An Atlantic City, NJ police officer died early Thursday morning after he accidentally shot himself in the face while attempting to install a rubber grip onto the handle of his service pistol.

Officials say 31-year-old officer Kevin Wilkins was on duty inside his patrol car at Kentucky and Baltic Avenues around 1:20am when he was killed by the single gunshot wound.

Investigators says Wilkns removed the ammunition clip from the gun but did not clear the chamber.
The 2˝-year veteran was pronounced dead at the scene. Funeral arrangements were pending.

Or why although it's a right...

not everyone should really be able to have a death weapon.

At least have like a idiot test.

They do for cars. Just a whole "let's see if they can NOT point it at their face if we hand it to them and tell them it's loaded"

I saw this story yesterday on the news and said to my wife that cardinal rule #1 is to treat EVERY weapon as if it was loaded regardless.

Very sad story I feel badly for the officer's family, but why does the article refer to him as a 2 and 1/2 year veteran of the force? Maybe they could have said he was on the job for 2 and 1/2 years but I would think you would need to be in service for at least 5 years before you start throwing around the word veteran.

If you believe people should work till they die to pay for a government worker to retire at 50, you're a Democrat. Otherwise, you're a Republican. All other differences between the parties are trivial.

But, agreed, this dude was an idiot.
I wouldnt go that far to call him an idiot. Maybe he was, maybe he wasnt. He could have been sleep deprived and wasnt thinking straight during a 12hour shift. Still always act as if any gun is loaded.

Maybe you're right. Actually, I don't like to make fun of the dead, and those who can't defend themselves, so I'm gonna edit that.

And they happen less in countries with stricter testing.

Our lacks of instruction and testing is why your car insurance is high.

    Driving licence in Sweden

Swedish driving licences (Swedish: Körkort) adhere to a standard set in the European Economic Area. Eighteen is the minimum age to obtain a licence.[1]

    [edit] Instruction

A learner's permit can be issued at age 16. The student may choose to learn by going to a driving school or in private with up to four different instructors. Usually a mix of the two is used.[citation needed] These instructors must be 24 or older and must have held a valid driver's licence for five years. The instructors and student must go through a traffic safety course together before permission is granted; it takes about three hours to complete and is usually given at all driving schools at certain dates.

When learners reach age 18 they may take a theory test (Swedish: Kunskapsprov); a score of 52 out of 65 questions is required to pass. They must also attend a hazard lesson (Swedish: Riskutbildning), which may, for instance, take place at a track which is sprayed with oil to make it slippery. First, students learn about the human factor and other dangers in traffic; then they drive the course and try to make the car spin so they can learn to control it during such situations.

You're missing the point. We have as many (by some counts, more) guns in this country than cars. Yet, 4-5 times as many people die by auto versus dying by gun violence and gun accidents. This would seem to indicate that licensing systems have, at best, done nothing to keep unqualified individuals off the road.

I'm a big advocate of safety training in any field. But the guns-vs-cars comparison is a excellent demonstration of regulatory failure.

Out driving test is a failure. I other places it's not.

    40,000 dead from accidents.

less from guns so I concur.

I dont' know know if you could ever test anyone's ability to handle a gun.

    So I give.

this could be a cover up for suicide. lots of cops commit suicide, but widow gets nothing unless it is ruled an accident.

I was thinking the same thing. I find it hard to believe he left a bullet in the chamber. Its simply too easy to clear the chamber.

There is a chance that he killed himself. But if a cop kills himself, his family doesn't get any of the money or benefits. Seriously, why would you try and put a new grip on your gun while on duty, in your cop car, with a loaded gun, and pointed towards your face?? It just doesnt make sense that it was an accident. IMO.
If guns kill people, then pencils misspell words.
