You lack of understanding of what countries are governed by Sharia law, what Sharia law is, and in general what this culture is, is astounding if it wasn't so naive. It is a backward culture(s), a backwards political system which also leads to a backwards economic systems. It plagues the majority of the middle east.
The law of Afghanistan is established in its constitution and is not sharia law. It is a fact. What is happening around the country due to a horrific civil war is that yes there is sharia law in places, and things we consider to be wrong are happening (btw - many of the laws you mentioned are taken originally from the Old
Testament, so yeah, but I am sure you knew that). I am sorry Nick, I don't think you have much of a clue as to what is out there. I know, big scary Muslims everywhere trying to kill you all of the time and what not. But when we did initially overthrow the Taliban we were greeted as saviors by so many there, especially the non-pashtuns. Unfortunately we did little to follow up that victory until Gates came on-board and we are in the place we are today.

It is a shame, and probably a lost cause, but mostly due to our own incompetence early on. We should probably pull out because I don't think we have an answer, or can afford one. Which is sad, because so many of the people who cheered us, will probably once again fall under the brutal rule of the Taliban. At which point they will once again actually be a Sharia state.

Who said anything about "big scary Muslims everywhere trying to kill you all of the time and what not"?

If that was how I felt, which I don't and have never said, wouldn't I advocate continuing and expanding war on muslims?
Would I be an advocate for enlarging the miltary budget or slashing it drastically?
Would I be advocating for keeping all our bases overseas or shrinking our military empire entirely?

I have always claimed it is a 'bogey man' to continue the warfare, welfare state and enrich the military industrial complex.

It's take a bit of jingoism and giant helping of ignorance to judge the capacity of a society such as Afghanistan considering it's be utterly and repeatedly decimated by imperial powers (mostly U.S and Britain) asserting colonial muscle and conducting proxy wars for ends that amount to little more than realpolitik.

FYI - Charlie Wilson's War was a good movie but historical revisionism at its best. The only reason the Russians invaded was to counter the growing anti-communist insurgency that we were providing material support to. Brzezinski admits as much and more going as far as to say "we wanted to give the USSR their Vietnam war".

Let's not mince words... we subjected a innocent population to the inevitable carnage of our war games for almost 30 years now so, for an American citizen to sit back and pass judgement on a populace we continue to murder, oppress, and occupy for undefined reasons and with an opaque objective is absurd.

And let us not discount the always present motive of pipeline politics.

For anyone to even consider an U.S. 'humanitarian' element in AfG is either willfully ignorant, irreparably propagandized, or a xenophobic sociopath.

    Barbaric or Not Barbaric ???

Egyptian designer runs afoul of Saudi princess, gets 500 lashes - latimes.com

CAIRO — Human-rights activists are demanding the release of Nagla Wafa, an Egyptian wedding planner and designer sentenced to 500 lashes and five years in prison in Saudi Arabia following a business dispute with a princess.

Wafa ran afoul of a royal in the Saudi kingdom over the finances of a joint business venture, according to her family. She was reportedly accused of cashing a check from the princess but not following through on their deal to start a restaurant.

“As of May of 2012, Ms. Wafa has been subjected, on a weekly basis, to 50 floggings per week within the ‘Al-Malz’ Prison. She currently faces 200 more floggings ... despite her suffering from distortions to her spine,” the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights said in an online statement.

Accusing Saudi Arabian authorities of unlawfully detaining the 39-year-old mother of teenage twins, the organization said the case was a “blatant violation” of human rights and filed a complaint with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Nashwa Ismael, Wafa’s mother, who lives in Cairo, said her daughter wasn’t accused of fraud charges until about 20 months after she was arrested in 2009. Ismael said the family wasn’t able to find a Saudi Arabian lawyer to take Wafa’s case until June, when they first went public with the issue.

Taliban beheads 17; 2 NATO troops killed | | The Bulletin

KABUL — Taliban insurgents beheaded 17 Afghans in a rebel-controlled area of southern Afghanistan, officials said Monday, and two NATO troops were killed by an Afghan soldier in the eastern part of the country.

The Afghans, two of them women, were killed Sunday night in the Kajaki area of Helmand province, where they were attending a party that featured music and mixed-gender dancing, provincial officials said. The radical Islamist Taliban movement, which enforced an extreme version of Islamic law during its 1996-2001 rule, prohibits such behavior.
“Nagla’s case should have appeared before a business court and she should have been notified of her accusations right away,“ Ismael told The Times.

doubt anyone other than probably Amnesty International or Human Rights Watch keep any count of those figures. There may be a running tally from the DoD which may be undercounted... nobody really will know how many civilians died in these two wars.

As opposed to the other religions which have been used to justify warfare or atrocities?

So you claim to not be prejudiced and than post these two.

Funny that the second one deals with the Taliban, whom we are fighting to "protect" other Muslims in Afghanistan against.

The other, is really just a story about a despotic and corrupt kingdom and a horrible miscarriage of justice. The North Koreans are not Muslims and do much worse things. So what is your point? Other than to reinforce the opinion that you are a bit of a Muslim basher.

You don't get it. People from ethnic or religious group X did something bad, so X = barbarians.

Since you had no leg to stand on when you wrote the following "big scary Muslims everywhere trying to kill you all of the time and what not" and I embarrassed you there...

Can you also point me to the post where I bashed the religion of Islam?

Yeah everyone saw you neglect to specifically name other barbarous countries because you don't want to be called out for trashing muslim nations.

I am right and have been saying it forever, diplomacy, war, etc .. it is all BS.

We kiss but, kiss but kiss but and kiss more but, then a pack of loons get their feelings hurt and panties in a wad, kill a few Americans, and the ass kissing starts all over again. The best thing we can do is get everyone of our citizens, political and armed forces, the f out of the region until these barbarians evolve past the dark ages. Isolate them and just let them kill each other.
