    Default trash pick up?

My usual trash day is Friday. I understand that it's been delayed because of snow. Will it be picked up MOnday or do we skip a week? I live in E. Mt. Airy.

The mayor said on TV that it would be picked up on Saturday.

The announced plan was to pick up Thursday and Friday routes on Saturday. I thought when I heard it that it sounded a bit optimistic and indeed, Saturday came and went with no pick-up on our Friday route. I did see one trash truck roaming the neighborhood during the day -- not actually picking up anything, just driving around.

Meanwhile, everybody in our neighborhood put out their trash and recyclables today and now it's all a soggy mess. Maybe tomorrow. Or who knows? The schedule will get knocked back yet another day next week due to the New Year holiday, so I don't imagine they'd want to fall any further behind. I remember a few years ago when a combination of winter weather and winter holidays threw the schedule into complete randomness for most of January.

Anyway, I checked the city's web site to see if there was any update on the pick-up status. Ha-ha, silly me. No news there, but I did learn something else disturbing --

THERE WILL BE NO CURBSIDE PICK UP OF CHRISTMAS TREES THIS YEAR!

I fully expect this reduction of services to be reflected on my property tax bill. And I'm certain that expectation makes me a certified lifetime member of the cock-eyed optimists society.

Maybe there is only a little left and they will get it Sunday morning. I like to be optimistic. If not then they will get it Monday morning.

    Really? The City says otherwise:

    Welcome to PhillyRecyclingPAYS.com

Your tree will not get recycled if left curbside, but it will be carted away. Information about tree recycling (not curbside) is in the link.

The key word seems to be recycling. Here's what I read on the Street Department section of phila.gov:

    http://www.phila.gov/streets/ChristmasTrees.html2010 Christmas Tree Collection

•There will be NO curbside recycling collection of Christmas trees.

It goes on to talk about taking your tree to various locations around the city during the week of Jan. 9-16, etc., but makes no other mention of curbside pickup. So I assumed there was none.

It looks like trees picked up curbside won't be recycled in an environmentally safe manner. Not sure what environmental hazard is being avoided here and I doubt I'll be strapping the old tree to the car and driving it over to Domino Lane, so to the curb it goes. Boo on me.

Philly311 - Your Connection to City Hall

Keep that in your bookmarks, it's highly useful.

    Trash and Recycling...
If your trash and recycling are normally collected on Tuesday, the Streets
Department will collect your trash on Wednesday. If your trash and
recycling are normally collected on Wednesday, the Streets Department will
collect your trash on Thursday. If your trash and recycling are normally
collected on Thursday or Friday, the Streets Department requests that you
place your trash and recycling out for collection on Saturday. This change
in collection schedule is a result of last weekend's snow storm and the
Christmas Holiday. Sanitation crews will work on both Saturday and Sunday
to collect the trash and recycling that is set out on Saturday. If your
trash and recycling are not collected on Saturday, expect it to be
collected on Sunday. If your trash has not been collected by Monday please
contact us to submit a service request.
