Default Moving to West Mt. Airy and need advice

My partner and I are thinking of moving to West Mt. Airy and need some information about the 100 block of West Hortter Street. The neighborhood seemed like it could get dicey, but may be ok. Is there a resident that can comment? I have a young child and need the neighborhood to be safe enough to walk around with a stroller. Any advice is helpful! Some of the houses look well kept up and others look a bit run down. I have lived in several Philly and other city neighborhoods, so I am not unfamiliar with city life, etc. I am just not familiar with Mt. Airy and have been away from Philly for several years and am relocating back soon - hooray!

    Thanks!

We have friends who live on 6600 Quincy (a few houses from Hortter) and we've been there for dinner many times, dropped our daughter off for sleepovers, etc, and never thought twice about it. It's a very pleasant location. I know that's the intersecting block, and things can change quickly in Philly, so I can't speak of Hortter per se, but I didn't get any weird vibes.

About a year ago we were looking at houses in W. Mt Airy and we found one we liked on the 300 block of West Hortter. For sure, that neighborhood has it's share of rundown looking homes, but I think that is mostly due to long time residents getting old and not being able to keep up their properties. I walked around the area for a bit and it did not seem sketchy, at all. The house we looked at was a complete rehab where the previous owner had let it fall into disrepair. A cop and his family lived in that attached twin. I can see a lot of the rundown homes in that area getting bought and rehabbed in the near future.

We live right near there (towards Carpenter), and I walk and run on Hortter all the time and feel perfectly safe (I am a female and I have two young children). I have a friend who lives farther down on Hortter as well (also has a small child), if you want to send me a message with your contact info I can connect you to her.

I live on that block. There are a few rundown houses, but it's very safe. I have a six month old and 2 year old and we are out walking around the neighborhood all the time. In fact, the two houses next to me also have little kids and there's at least two or three other families on the block that also have small children. We have an active town watch group and if you move here, the group organizers will be at your door as soon as you move in to introduce themselves. If you have any other questions about the neighborhood, let me know.
