Default W Mt Airy crime question

    Hi all,

I just recently moved to West Mt Airy and am loving the feel of the neighborhood (near McCallum and Sedgwick streets). A family member who lives nearby warned me that there are a number of break-ins in that area and to be careful. I'm trying to take the precautions seriously, as she was quite insistent, but I also want to appreciate the neighborhood and don't want to be constantly worrying about break-ins if I have windows open / shades up when I'm home.

Looking for additional opinions to add some nuance to her advice.

    Thank you!

I have been here 2 and a half years and I never worry about that stuff. I sometimes leave windows open over night with those little locks that hold them in the cracked position. I leave my porch light on over night. During the day, I don't think about it at all.

I live in West Philly and don't even worry about that stuff that often. I would say even my routine is similar to Geno's. Maybe people target Mt Airy more for home invasions then here, but I think you'll be okay.

Outside of The Boogeyman who lives in Carpenter's Woods, you really don't have much to worry about.

I lived in Mt. Airy most of my life. On the East side and the West side. My family have lived in Mt. Airy over 60yrs.I have a cousin who is a cop in the 14th. district. Please show me the cases of where people are targeting Mt. Airy for home invasions? Most of the home invasions I have seen are in North Philly,West Philly,South West and now there have been a string of invasions in the lower part of the NE.I know Mt.Airy is not perfect, but your statement about home invasions is just false.

Northwest Philly, including Mt. Airy and Chestnut Hill have the most home break-ins in all of Philadelphia. There's a difference between invasions and break-ins.

The invasions are people targeting business owners and people they know who have money or drugs.

awesome - thanks for the replys! I think I'll likely get some of those little locks for the windows and that should keep my mind happy.

Well if you read what I wrote instead of setting yourself because someone inferred that there could be crime in mt airy you'd see I suggested that "maybe" there were more home invasions. And my whole post was telling her not to worry anyway. Oh and I was right. Thanks for you life story though, you self righteous prick.

I haven't heard of any home invasions in Mt. Airy, nor have I heard about any particular spate of burglaries there either. It is my opinion that crime in Mt. Airy has gone down dramatically over the past 15 years. I remember when Steve Lopez's son had his basketball sneakers stolen off of his feet in Mt. Airy about 20 years ago. I believe that the neighborhood has come a long way since then. It used to be that the chaos of Germantown spilled over into Mt. Airy, and now I feel more like the calm of Mt. Airy is spreading into Germantown (although Germantown can still be plenty wild, depending on where in Germantown you are [like the 100 block of West Logan Street, for instance]).

I`M aware of the break ins. He said "Maybe people target Mt Airy more for home invasions then here, but I think you'll be okay." and that is not so. Having people think that guys are running around Mt.Airy breaking down doors with guns while you are home watching tv,is a bunch of bull.
Now as far as break ins. Use a little common sense and you will be fine. Keep your house well lit.Lock your windows on the first floor when you go to bed or out to the store. If you are going away, have a neighbor or a friend pick up your mail and keep your lights on.Know your neighbors, look out for each other. Like I said my family has lived in Mt.Airy for over 60yrs and none of us have ever had a break in.
One more thing, they are breaking into the homes out in the suburbs.

Break-ins happen everywhere, especially in the spring and early summer when homeowners get lax and leave ground-floor windows open all day while they are gone. It causes quite a fuss in a safe, normally-quiet community when you get 4 or 5 break-ins in a certain area over the course of a couple of weeks. People raise their awareness, take the usual precautions, and the problem goes away.

Be happy that such things even make the news or become community talking points--in many parts of a big city your next door neighbor could fall victim to a burglary and you'd never hear a word about it because it's small potatoes.

There certainly isn't a crisis when it comes to home invasions. But they do happen, and throughout all of Mt. Airy (including East and West), there are probably about six to seven per week. Sometimes West Mt. Airy has two, or one, or three, but there is one in West Mt. Airy pretty much every week. They do happen.

Just last week, here's what happened in West Mt. Airy:

Police said a fire safe, $2,700 in cash and other items were taken from an apartment on the 500 block of Carpenter Lane May 30 after it was broken into.

Police said a television, an XBox and a computer were taken from a home on the unit block of West Sharpnack Street Sunday; there was no sign of forced entry.

This is my last post on this topic. "A HOME INVASION" is when two or more people who know you are home, kick in your door with guns in hand. They usually tie everyone up ,sometime beat and ruff up the home owners till they hand over money, jewelry and sometimes drugs. What you are posting are break ins and robberies, that happens everywhere in Philly and the suburbs. This is a HOME INVASION Five Intruders Invade Home In Tacony Section Of Philadelphia « CBS Philly

Much like "burglary" vs. "robbery" a lot of people tend to use the terms interchangeably, when they most certainly are not the same thing. A burglary sucks, no doubt, but it's not the same thing as being robbed. A robbery is a MUCH more traumatic experience. A home invasion, even moreso.

Home invasions are never random. If you are the target of a home invasion, 99% of the time it's because you are known to have a cache of drugs, guns, or money in your house. So usually the victims are either involved in the drugs trade, or are immigrant business owners who for whatever reason choose to keep stacks of cash in their homes rather than in a bank.

So you're an idiot that doesn't know what the word "maybe" and "okay" mean. I can admit that I should have said "burglaries" instead of "home invasions" to be technically accurate, but you attacked me for essentially saying that she likely DID NOT have much to worry about.

The topper is that you were actually wrong, you pompous boob, but way to totally ignore actual facts there another poster presented. Now because you are a stubborn ass, I will make a huge deal out of what I initially did not consider to be much of an issue.

I know you magically discerned that burglaries only happen in "bad" parts of the city you've heard about, like my neighborhood, but police data indicates otherwise. That's right, criminals do actually travel to wealthier areas to steal **** from people's homes, as unbelievable as that sounds. Here's what my neighborhood looks like:

Egad, look at all those burglaries! Now let's look at Mt Airy, where no one has heard of B&E's:

So in the last 30 days there were 12 burglaries in my slice of West Philly, and 9 around the central portion of Mt. Airy. Now, given that my zip (19143) has a population density of 23,876 people per square mile and Mt Airy (19119) is 10,176 per sq mi, that means a given person in the last month was actually MORE LIKELY to have their home burglarized in Mount Airy than University City/inner West Philly. But hey, who cares about facts and stuff when you can just make unsourced assertions.

Mt. Airy is a wonderful, attractive neighborhood, and definitely has way less violent crime than a lot of the city. But it's next to large, less wealthy area and suffers from sporadic burglaries. Sorry.

I was done with this thread ,but since you took the time to do all this research for me.I will answer you.Like I said,I know about the break ins. I gave advice on how to combat it.If you had said break ins and not HOME INVASION.I would not have replied to your thread.I'M happy that you have found your slice of heaven where you live at. I hope you have a great day
