Angry Manheim Street Burglary (500 Block-right off wissahickon)

So I came home from work today and a friend of ours was over working on the property next door to us-we share a driveway with our neighbors....and he informed us that our neighbor's 2nd floor apt (of a triplex) was broken into today. She works from home, someone may have been casing her apt, and saw her leave within the 15 min that she returned they had already broken in, stolen her computer and other various personal items and left. Everyone be on the lookout as these robberies/break-ins are becoming more and more frequent out of here. Luckily we have our big dog, but the locks and all on our windows are and always have been permanently locked.... Everyone please take vigilance and if you see anything or have seen anything in relation to THIS incident please let the police know... we feel so bad for her.....

Looks like it's time to get out of germantown.....

    Shame...

This would be considered a burglary... and it happens everywhere in the city, not just Germantown. Where can you move that something like this wouldn't occur?

The Ivy Ridge area of Roxborough had this type of burglary go on for ages. East Falls had it happen there. It's annoying, but making your home burglar resistant will be a bigger help than moving from neighborhood to neighborhood every time something like this happens.

    Wink

There are multiple robberies in Chestnut Hill on almost a daily basis. Don't let a burglary force you to move. Unfortunately, they happen everywhere.

ETA: I don't know how that smiley face got on the top of my post. I did not intend to make light of the situation.

wow obviously you couldn't read or feel the frustration in my post... Quite frankly i DO understand that this happens all over I am not THAT naive, I just came on and blogged my frustration of it happening right next to my front door pretty much seeing that we are so close... but thanks for your sentiment.....

Okay wow everyone needs to kind of relax, all i was doing was pretty much putting it out there that this area was recently hit with a burglary (thank you for the correction) and for everyone to just be aware.also how sad it is to see the neighborhood succumb to the kind of low life trash that you're hearing about recently all over... .. no need to pick me apart that "this happens everywhere" or "do i ever open my windows" of course I do its been beautiful out...yes i know I said permanently but I mean come on can anyone take sarcasm or understand that for security i might have meant that our windows are locked for that purpose when we are not home etc.... I mean come on....Why don't you go look at the crime on the rise blogs in germantown, chesnut hill etc and rip those people up too, just for keeping people informed and maybe helping someone out in being a little more aware of their surroundings.....

Keeping others informed and relaying important neighborhood developments is one thing.

But the above is simply overreacting!

Yeah i'd agree. It's not like Germantown ever (at least in the last 40 years) had a reputation for being a crime-free neighborhood. If your neighbor got beat up or killed, hey, I get it. But petty break-ins are something that affect all the neighborhoods in the city, and even the suburbs to an extent. That's why people in the suburbs still buy security systems. It sucks, but abandoning your neighborhood won't do much except remove an additional person that cares and keeps an eye out for criminal activity.

Chicken Little didn't come on half as strong as you did when she declared that the sky was falling. Informing neighbors of a break-in is one thing, spewing hyprebole and using 6, count them, SIX, exclamation marks is overkill. I lived in Germantown for 32 years, and my mother has lived there for 80 years, and still does. Crime in Germantown has been an ongoing problem for decades, sometimes often and sometimes not so often. Being aware of that and taking precautions is one thing, acting like this is the end of the world as we know it is something else. I doubt if anyone in Germantown could say that crime and misfortune hasn't happened near their front doors, if not to their front doors, so you are far from the only person to have had these feelings. As far as you being THAT naive, the jury hasn't come back yet.

Actually, YOU need to relax. Germantown has had to deal with an element of low life trash for quite some time, and the problems they bring. This is not the first crime of its kind, nor will it be the last. Alerting others to be aware of it is a good thing; running around making outlandish claims only distorts the message. You didn't mention how the person(s) gained access to the apt, so we don't know if it was carelessness on her part or a forced entry. That kind of information is more important than declaring that it is time to leave Germantown over a break-in.

It would be nice of either OP or a mod to edit the thread's subject to "Manheim Street BURGLARY!!!!!!" so that it stops freaking people out.
