    Default Urban Athlete

Anyone go there? I have been going to The Well Loft and really like it but the classes are limited. I was looking at Urban Athlete but i'm a bit intimidated. i'm in 10000% better shape than i was 6 months ago, but i'm still a bit self conscious about working out in front of other people.

any insight on their facility/atmosphere would be greatly appreciated.

You have absolutely nothing to fear. My wife and I have been going for almost a year, and I don't think I've ever seen such a welcoming, diverse, and helpful community ever in the fitness world (and I used to be a fitness instructor back in the day). UA members are black, white, young, old, and range in sizes and abilities. The best part about it is that not only are the members non-judgmental and non-competitive, but they are supportive of people, especially beginners. I remember when I started out and the workouts were kicking my ass, people in the group stuck around until I finished every last repetition, purely to be supportive.

The instructors - Katie, Pamela, and Amanda - are phenomenal, and manage to be both supportive and motivating at the same time they're pushing you to work to your ability.

And finally, the workouts are based on # or repetitions in a period of time, or a fixed # of repetitions, but in a class of 5 or 10 or 15 people, the others aren't standing around checking the size of your kettlebell or counting the # of reps your doing - they're focused on their own work out (each in their own zone). So you shouldn't worry about feeling awkward working out in front of others.

Try it out - give it a month. It's really terrific.

I've heard the same from other members. They love it. I'd join, but don't really need a gym in my line of work

I recently became a member of UA this past month and I'm really happy with the decision. I took an Intro to Kettlebell class through MALT at UA which was a good intro and a good way for me to get acclimated with the gym and the type of exercises. I really feel like I am getting the best work-outs of my life. Everyday is different, lots of variety and I never get bored. I've also taken classes at the Well Loft and I like it there too, UA is just a lot more convenient to where I live.

I just tried to call UA and got a message that the number was "temporarily disconnected." Does anyone know if they are still in business?

The Well Loft is much more convenient to me (around the corner, i can walk) but alas, just got notice that the Germantown location is closing. I'm glad I joined UA, even though it is a major hit on my budget.

do you go in the evening? If so, I'm sure I've seen you. I'm the one continually bitching. I hate working out.

I went to a Crossfit gym once. It was AWFUL. They were so competitive and really hostile to new people. I'm sure there are Crossfit gyms that are welcoming and fun, but it left a bitter taste in my mouth and I decided they were a fitness cult.
