I get my hair cut there and he's been closed for about two weeks. I know he had some health problems. Sign on door says "closed sometimes for doctors visits" (I'm paraphraseing) but its been there for a couple weeks.
Anyone know what's up?

A friend of mine who goes to him asked me who my barber was on Saturday. Not sure if something happened.
Barbers seem hard to come by in this area....
I heard that Don was not doing well. Can't be more specific.
Frank in CH is still working Thursday - Saturday.
Does anyone else work with Frank? I stopped in and there were 6 people waiting. At 15 minutes a cut I would have to wait 2 hours.
I go to Roxborough for my hair cuts.
Flangan's in Lafayette Hill does a good job. See Fran. It took me 5 years to find a good barber in Philly.
Frank works alone. I have rarely seen his shop that busy. Try again another time. I think Thursday and Saturday AM are his busiest times.
Don gave me my first professional haircut when I was a toddler in the 60s. His wife died recently and I was afraid that he would would fall into poor health as the elderly often do after losing their spouses. Hopefully he will rebound
If Frank is busy, try Angelo in the alley just below Highland and Germantown on the east side just across from Zipfs candies. He's another good old time barber many people don't know about because his shop is hard to notice unless you know where it is

This saddens me greatly. I stopped in to see Don two weeks ago (not even for a haircut but to talk about Irene and the shore) and he told me about some health issues. Don is Mt. Airy for me.
I got my hair cut by Don yesterday, Thursday the 15th. He did about three customers and then could not continue. Went home to rest. This is how recent days have been for him, recovering from a hospitalization: a few fellows in the morning, then has to quit, go home, rest, and get bored! I went other places in childhood & teen years (Andy, Russ), landed at McFarland's with Sol in the 60s, and when he left Don for the last 40+ years. Johnny Brown is correct: after 57 years there, Don IS Mt. Airy! As Rich suggests, when Don has been ill in recent years I have gone to Angelo (and Victor who used to be with him) a couple of times.
Great to hear that he is back at least working a bit. Thanks for the update. I will stop in tomorrow and see him.

Don is cutting my hair as I am typing this. he is gettting some strength back. He was able to work later today than he had in previous days. He lost two pints of blood, somehow and the doctors aren't sure how. They have been giving him iron shots He had some other symptoms and was in the hospital for a week. Good to see him back.
