Default CH robbery at gunpoint by DING DING! - yes- a black male!

So, my boyfriend went to pick up a slice at Mario's Pizza yesterday afternoon around 2:30pm and found several squad cars there when he arrived. Apparently, a black male held up the guys at Mario's at gunpoint, took their money (and credit card machine, too) and then ran into the dry cleaner's next door.

He did the same to them, but apparently they all ran and locked themselves in a back room, leaving the guy to wrestle the register out of the place. This drycleaner has been hit 3 times in the last year! Mario's had been robbed by this same guy once before. Police said that they had a security camera photo of the guy from ANOTHER gunpoint robbery he had committed earlier that day!

His description- 6'2" black male, medium build, black jeans and a white shirt. If anyone knows of a composite drawing of this guy, or has a photo- please post it!

I have had it with this s**t, I really have. I am sick and tired of working hard to EARN what I have, only to have some POS with a misplaced sense of entitlement just take it. We have been burgularized twice in a 6 month period last year on the 100 block of Benezet Street and now every time I turn around, there is a report of another burgulary/robbery in CH.

The second time we were burgularized last year, the officer that came out told us to call the police is we saw anyone that "didn't belong there", like blacks or Mexicans. These were the officer's words, not mine. I had been told by a different officer that CH residents tend to NOT CALL police when they see suspicious people in areas where they do not live or have a reason to be because they suffer from white guilt. I was one of those people for a long time, but no more.

Slavery is wrong - time has taught the world this. And I will not be effectively enslaved by enriching those who see fit to take what I worked hard to create/buy. I encourage those of CH to think twice before they say to themselves "calling the police would be a prejudiced thing for me to do" when their gut tells them otherwise.

Boo hoo. You know the rest of the city has way higher crime rates than Chestnut Hill. It sucks that you got robbed, but chill with the enslavement drama and join the town watch instead of calling the cops every time you see a mexican dude on germantown avenue.

No, this is a great idea. Anytime you see anything that makes you suspicious, you should immediately call 911 and report a suspicious person. Police love this, and I think it would really make for a great way to live. If we can all get on board, and call the police continually, I bet crime will go away. Like magic!

Yeah cops love getting bogged down with spurious calls like "I see a black male walking around, do something!". it sounds like a really effective use of police resources to have the police investigate every minority you see.

    Please note:

First - I do not live in any other area but CH and so I am not directly able to note any suspicious goings on in other areas that may have higher crime rates, on a daily basis. I do have a vested interest in the neighborhood I live in, as I am fairly sure we all do. I used to live at 29th and Girard and had people being shot outside of my apt, so I know what other areas of the city deal with.

Second - I think I *did* say that it was the police that made the suggestion of calling them when something out of the norm was noted.

We all get a gut feel about things we see, both good and bad. It might be good to listen to our gut feel, instead of ignoring it, is all. This is the message the police officers gave us.

It *is* very convenient to just yell at the messenger though, Thoth!

As to crime rates, you might be surprised at the crimes that happen every day in CH. Check out everyblock.com. In the crimes section, you can enter your address and see all of the crimes that have happened in a 3-8 block radius. Do a 1 year search under burgularies. There were 68 in 6 months in 2009 in an 8 block radius of the the address we lived at when we were burgularized twice in 6 months. That's alot, in my mind. Too many.

According to DHS, suspicious persons and activity should be reported to the FBI; that's who I'd call if I even *thought* I might have smelled a black or brown person.

Get used to it. And get used to more of it. As the economy declines even further, the frequency of robberies will increase.

In defense of the OP, neither he/she or the cop that gave the advice are racist or live in fear for what they said. thoth and others miss the point. If a Cadillac Escillade with rims and loud bass drives slowly down a residential street in CH, that's suspicious. It's Chestnut Hill, not Frankford. Odds are they don't live there nor are they just out on a Sunday drive. The cop was saying liberals will turn away and hit themselves for thinking anything negative since the car was filled with blacks. Just wanted to throw in some perspective.

To the OP. If you started this thread with its rather inflammatory title in order to start one of those good old fashioned race food fights, forget it. We, thankfully, don't do that silly stuff around here anymore. Its a nice day. Go outside and find something better to do with your self.

You know if an escalade is parked on or near my street I know something is going down, because I know the regular street dealers around the corner can't afford one.

I used to take the R7, R8 and 23 from Chestnut Hill, and there were always plenty of black and fellow brown people waiting at the stops with me.

So, looks like you have your work cut out for you--better get busy on that phone!

Tony. You need to go out and get some fresh air too. Should be a nice evening. Hubby and I will be hanging out on our front porch with the neighbors and a few beers.

Nope! Obviously by posting TWICE, you are sitting at your computer. Take your own advice! You obviously have some interest in this subject, JUST LIKE Tony and the OP, so get off your high horse. They have an opinion on the matter, you just degrade them for it.

I have a neighbor who calls the cops at the first sign of anything "suspicious." Her suspicions are easily aroused, however. Once she saw a guy in a parked car talking on a cell phone and thought it must be someone arranging a drug deal. Well, maybe. Or it might just be someone with the good sense to pull over and park when talking on the phone.

My suspicion is that the cops, like everybody else around here, basically ignore her now.

Yes, because I'm sure the robber was simply laid off during this recession...

When people have nothing to loose, they are more likely to commit a crime. When people lose their jobs and become desperate to make ends meet, they sometimes turn to petty crime to get themselves out of a jam.
