Default New Blood for Main Street 2012

So, now that we've had a bit of turn over on Main Street,
what are the best and worst changes since summer 2010?
(real businesses only, vapor-ware proposals don't count)

Best - Han Dynasty; amazing chinese flavor with authentic spice.

Worst - lost Mediterranean - Meze gone, Pita Uno sounded interesting.

Have to try - Ali Baba

Would love to see - OCF Realty put a whole foods at Carmella's / Arroyo site

A bit off Main but Palm Tree is really great.

Gemelli's. Not sure how business has been going for them though. Seems slow everytime I'm in there

I'll just second Hal here: Han Dynasty is an unbelievable gem, and I already miss Meze.

As for Palm Tree, that is a great addition too, but I'm curious to see how the food-marke situation will shape up once Main St. Market's renovations are done.

Would love to see a UPS store.

Default Ditto the UPS Store (more)

    [QUOTE=Would love to see a UPS store.[/QUOTE]

So would I. I thought it would be a great addition to the Citizens Bank strip at Ridge and Martin. The secondhand word I heard, however, is that UPS has strict rules on proximity of these stores to each other, and apparently the one in Chestnut Hill is too close (???). At any rate, retailers have very specific formulae for new stores, and if the numbers don't match up they look elsewhere.

Anyone know what's going on with Main Street Market? They were expanding and the sign in their window said re-opening the beginning of July.

Last weekend when I went by they were still closed.

Yeah...it has been a while but I think it will be worth the wait. I know Richard had run into a few hang ups but most of them are related to ensuring the job is done right. From what I gathered talking to him, the place is going to be amazing. I think he may have even mentioned the entire basement being refinished for additional sitting areas including WIFI and TV's. He also has the pork place opening where the Turkish joint was a few weeks back. He must like the old Saxby's locations, ha. All that said, I don't know an exact date but I do know things are still moving forward (just a little slower than planned).

I think he's referring to the long awaited Rubb BBQ.

Does anyone know if the new Han place at 4410 will actually open? They were doing tons of work there, then it just seemed to stop cold. They might be still working or getting permits but right now there are no signs of life.

What new Han place? Do you mean that Belvedere's Cervisia at 4410 is officially dead?

Or, could that be confusing either of two other projects
    - the proposed Asian restaurant at 4400-10 Main was Moon Krapthongs first location for Yanako
    or
    - the proposed 4371 Chabaa Thai expansion into the 4373 Belvedere leased space?

    4373?
New Manayunk Sushi Place to Debut Soon - Roxborough-Manayunk, PA Patch
After closing Mango Moon, Krapugthong tried to expand Chabaa Thai into 4371 Main St., which was approved by the Manayunk Neighborhood Council.
After a dispute with then-building managers Belvedere Business Group (which owns Main Street Market, Agiato and other businesses), plans stalled.
In December, the group vacated the building following a lawsuit, paving the way for a potential Chabaa expansion, according to the MNC.
Bad news, no Chabaa Thai expansion, although Belvedere is out of 4373, the owner now has it up for sale, no restaurants.

    4400-4410?
As I understand it, after Mango Moon closed in April 2011 so that Moon could open Yanako at 4400-4410 Main
    http://philadelphia.foobooz.com/2011...moon-to-morph/
something similar happened with the 4400-4410 Space

Krapugthong has had this Manayunk project in mind for some time.
Last year, when she closed MangoMoon, her posh Asian down the street where Gemelli on Main is now,
she had intended to open Yanako at 4410 Main, across from Kildare's.
But after a falling out, the project shifted to a former boutique near Rector Street.

    Two new Manayunk projects

Rich Rivera and Rob Nydick, who own Agiato and the Main Street Market on Main Street in Manayunk, are on the move with two projects.
And as noted on NewsWorks, Rivera and Nydick are planning Cervisia, a beer-centered restaurant and bottle shop, in the former Mainly Shoes across the street at 4400 Main St.
(You may recall that last spring, Moon Krapugthong of Chabaa Thai had claimed that the space would house Yanako, a Japanese restaurant. Apparently, there was no deal.)
About the time that Terrace Taproom was closed down,
Belvedere took 4400-4410 Main to salvage the Terrace Taproom liquor license as "Cervisia"

MNC approves new townhouse project and Main Street restaurant
Rivera said Cervisia would use a liquor license to be transferred from the now-closed Terrace Taproom at 3847 Terrace St., so it's not actually bringing a new liquor license to the neighborhood.

Eh, this reminds me, can we please steer the conversation back to places that are open and that actually exist?
What IS good on Main Street NOW, not what-was-promised-but-ain't-open-yet...

So, did anybody actually go to the Yanako opening?

I went the Friday Yanako opened. It was supposed to be friends and family only, but they told us to come anyway. Meal was complimentary so it was extra tasty. The inside is really well done. I'll definitelu be back there often.

    Eh, what hang ups?
    Care to elaborate?
    "A few" - so what are hang ups 1, 2, 3, 4, through 62,716?

Main street market is still taped off, no sign of activity I've seen or any type of dates announced. Is this thing doa? I used to go down there regularly, being closed isn't going to help retain customers..

I'd be happy to elaborate if I knew more details but my conversations with Richard were only in passing. As I said, the only notable specifics he said to me were regarding finishing the downstairs as an additional seating area and I think his cafe bar is going to be top notch so he was waiting on some equipment from that. I still get it...it has been a long time and everyone wants it back. Whatever the reasons, I am sure they are reasonable. After all, I am sure the delay doesn't benefit him at all and no one would want to see the place up and running faster than him.

As far as losing customers....eh...maybe, but I doubt it.

Instead of bogging down in discussion about all the businesses based on
"fair-haired maidens on unicorns delivering take out"

can we focus on businesses that are actually open?

Promises are great, but if I'm hungry now, where's a good place to eat?

Dice's Deli: Fresh cuts meats and some of the best made sandwiches on Main St. also catering small to large jobs; not to mention a great owner that values a positive customer service experience.

Yes it is dead. I would be surprised if Agiato re-opens too. The Jew lawyers are like vultures over Main Street waiting for their next lawsuit.
