Default Fenced lot on Calumet St (EF)

Does anyone know why the lot used for parking on calumet st was fenced up?

A ramp is being built, I imagine to enhance pedestrian access between the new development and the rest of the neighborhood. I don't have any more info.

This is the Philadelphia Housing Authority's project. I have asked for the plans and will share details when I get them.

It's a defacto playground at the moment. Luckily, it seems like it hasn't affected surrounding parking too much.

They bought the houses that used to be there and demolished them to creat a through street in about 1954 when Schuylkill Falls was developed. Now it provides pedestrian access to get to the train, library, schools, etc.

I just hope it doesn't become a drivable cut-through to the development.

It can't. There's a huge grade change, for one. For another, it would need to go through a parking lot, which wouldn't be kosher. It is meant to be walkable, though. Right now there's a tiny opening on the fence for pedestrians.

It also makes a very handy escape route for any of the muggings that occur on calumet

What muggings on Calumet? Escape to where? Walkable communities are safer than non-walkable communities. Haven't you seen the recent study about the false sense of safety engendered by living on a cul de sac? Your thinking offends me.

Well there was the "rape" last year. Not too long before that there was the guy that was held up at gunpoint outside of his house on Calumet. Then there were the individuals that were struck in the head with a bottle. This is just off of the top of my head.

Escape to where? Back to the public housing in Falls Ridge.

Falls Ridge is not a source of crime in EF.

The 'rape' was a girl getting into a guy's car, he driving around the corner, where they parked, and then who knows what happened. Noone told her to get into that car, and she was obviously foolish for doing so. You act like a woman was assaulted as she walked down the street. What happened on Upper Calumet was 'acquaintance/date' rape, which is an entirely different thing, and he would have had a hard time escaping in his car through the non-driveable pass-through on Lower Calumet. I don't know what happened regarding the other two things you reference. I do know there was a fight by the bridge where some people got beat up not too long ago, but it is my understanding that they had it coming to them.

well in that case it sounds like the assault was completely acceptable.

Would you care to elaborate? I walk through Falls Ridge daily at various times of night and have never noted much beyond 8yr olds playing kickball or riding their bikes. There's no litter, no graffiti, and the houses appear to be well kept. I'd have a hard time believing that FR is a source of crime.

Just go to the police department's website and look at the crime map for the past 30 days.
