I counted 4--McGillicuddy's, Manayunk Brewing Company, Kildare's, and Mad River. (They list the Old City address and website for Mad River, but they specifically talk about the Manayunk location in the writeup.)

I've been to about 11 of the bars on this list. It seems to list pretty much every "club" type bar.
I understand why they picked most of these places that cater towards the younger crowds, but what bar should a person go to be non douchy? Is every little corner bar better? Should we all always want to go to a chill bar where we can wear shorts on a Saturday night and drink one beer and go home? I, like many people, like to look nice and most times I'm looking to have fun whether it be by drinking too much or just hanging out being a goof with my friends. The list makers don't seem to like exclusivity. Any bar with a wait...you make the list. Any bar that has good looking girls working there...you make the list. Any bar where there has been any type of drama that has spilled out onto the street....you move up 2 spots on the list.

I LOL'ed at the photo of the crowd waiting in front of Rumor.

Other than that, this list seems really douchey.

Same here. Someone asked me to go there Saturday night, and I immediately stopped talking to them.

Damn too many places in the city to stand in line to get into a particular one. And covers... not my thing (unless a quality band is playing). As to the list I can't say I've been to many of the places listed (I do tend to watch post-season baseball at Paddy Whacks but that is more out of superstition). I guess the velvet rope places serve a purpose - just not mine.

Yeah-I don't know if Paddywhacks deserves to be on the list. Don't get me wrong-I avoid it like the plague on the weekends, but weekdays are ok. Food is pretty good as well.

hahaha. I would say that any bar that contains a person who lists "exclusivity" as a criterion for choosing a place to drink makes the list.

Waiting to get into a bar is retarded in a city with literally thousands of bars. Most bars in my experience tend to hire good looking bartenders, and who wants to go to a bar that is known for having lots of fights? The idea that this article is "picking on" these bars is silly.

I most often hear that from suburban transplants who all of the sudden think they have some street cred after 4 years at Penn.

I most often hear if from idiots who are secretly afraid of Philadelphia and are shocked to find out they've actually voluntarily gone there before. It's usually followed by "Well, okay, I guess, but it's only technically in Philadelphia". Frustrating.

You'd be surprised at how many people think that.

The list isn't that bad. I would disagree with manayunk brewpub, of which I personally think is actually quite pleasant. Also, I refuse to believe that Fox and Hound, the douche'n'beer factory as it may be, is more douchey than Fado across the street.

No Public House, as was pointed out in the comments, is really a big miss.

They might be taking their lead from Chestnut Hill-ers...who will have addresses that say Chestnut Hill, Pennsylvania, as opposed to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I was at an event in the Convention Center some years back and heard a woman tell another that the office in question was in Chestnut Hill, a little section *outside* of Philadelphia. Umm, no. Last I checked you were all still within the contiguous city and county boundaries of Philadelphia.

Ugh, this all drives me up a wall. It's like any time someone goes to a nice part of Philadelphia they think "oh this can't possibly be Philadelphia, i must have entered some magical hamlet". And the smugness to still argue some fraction of that point after you've been proven wrong is what gets me the most.

As for Chestnut Hillers, I'd like to believe city residents that do it just love their neighborhood identities and aren't intentionally trying to convince outsiders they don't really live here. But I wonder...I mean I know we've had rough times, but c'mon have some friggin unity.

People are really bad at the borders. I've seen East Falls, PA on addresses and also had people not realize some part of DelCo (forgot which place and don't want to bring randomuser out from hibernation) wasn't actually in Philadelphia.

It's even worse in Germantown. There are very many gorgeous parts of G-town, but somehow they're supposedly in 'Mt. Airy' or 'East Falls', when even a cursory glance at a map would show that you're in Germantown. I've even had a Germantowner identify himself as living in the 'Lincoln Drive Area', which was a head-scratcher for me - he meant 400 W. Price Street, which belongs on a postcard.

If it's OK for Montgomery County residents to use their post offices and not their townships (Merion Station over Lower Merion, Glenside over Abington, Blue Bell over Whitpain, etc), or even more confusingly to use the name of a nearby borough over their township (Narberth over Lower Merion, Jenkintown over Abington, Conshohocken over Plymouth, etc) then I feel it's perfectly acceptable for city residents to use our post offices instead of Philadelphia. Anyone with half of a brain should know that 191 is Philadelphia anyway; when I use Philadelphia and I'm not mailing internationally I omit the PA following 'Philadelphia' since I feel it's redundant. Anyone who doesn't know that 'Phila. 191XX' means the city in Pennsylvania is an idiot who shouldn't be handling mail.

I personally think that Chestnut Hill people who pay wage tax are annoyed by people who move into 'Wyndmoor' (really Springfield Township), which is located in one of the 4% of municipalities in Pennsylvania that don't levy a wage tax, and try to act like they live in Chestnut Hill, but that may be just me. We were out at dinner on Saturday night with three other couples; we were the only couple that weren't Philly Cricket bond traders. All three couples lived in Philly when we were first married, and three still do. One of the guests made a snide comment about the one guy 'going over to the dark side' when he moved to Wyndmoor; of course when I asked him where he lives he acted like he lives in Chestnut Hill, even though he'd need to drive into Chestnut Hill if he wanted to go there. He doesn't even have the option of taking the train or Forbidden Drive, like I do.
