    Default shawmont bike path

Well it looks as if they screwed the resident's along nixon street. Great job shawmont civic and city officials, looks like crime and the smell of piss will soon be the new topic for that area

Screwed them by re-routing the SRT so it avoids Nixon St. altogether? I'm sure most of the residents are relieved.

I've been watching this thread to see what's up. You are being very coy about your anger (not sure if thats the right word), but I'm going to take a guess:

Until now, its not easy or self evident for a road biker to get from CC/Manayunk onto the SRT north. It's always been a hard slog (for some of us, though certainly not Bob"vertcllimberextraordinaire"head).

With the completion of this section of the trail, it looks to be an easy connection from the Manayunk cow-path to the north part of the SRT, bypassing the slog... via Nixon street.

Therefore, tons of Lance's riding through your little nieghborhood.

If that's your beef, the only problem is that the cowpath is not amenable to road bikes, so roadsters pretty much go around it (and your street). Nothing will change

    except

there might now be more casual bikers continuing on up the Northern section of the trail.

I think your fears are probably correct. Except the peeing part- no one is going to pee in your front yard, thats hysteria not tied to reality. Or the crime part- bikers don't stop to commit crime. You may just lose some peace and quite in the summer.

Its a reason to leverage constructing a real trail connecting this odd little blip on an otherwise great trail. It's weird that of all the trail connectors being bandied about, there's nothing about this huge gap. I would certainly support you in any effort to get this done, even if as a road biker i will never go through your street.

Well, skipping the opinion, facts are, after MANY, MANY years of ideas and discussion, construction has begun to align the bike path
behind and parallel to Nixon Street.

Initial idea, from about 6 years ago, was to relocate the bike trail off of Nixon over to the old Pennsylvania RR right of way which ran behind the homes on the
north side of Nixon, and reuse the bridge to take bikes over Shawmont.

Problem was that many homes had extended and expanded back along and into that ROW, thus creating conflict, and a concern with having bikes in front, and bikes in back.

about 2 years ago, City Council approved a proposal to relocate the bike trail to the area under the powerline ROW, taking the bike trail further away and downhill from the
    Nixon Street residents.

Construction has started - so it's a bit of a shock to neighbors to see something actually moving forward.

    Uphill ?

I forgot about this new section.

Maybe Nixon street can have "collapsable" bollards installed on their street so they only get bikers in their (huge) back yards.

Three houses at the corner of Shawmont and Nixon will still see heavier traffic.

Nah, I really suck as a climber. Seriously. So when I say that hill isn't that bad, it really isn't.

I think your fears are probably correct. Except the peeing part- no one is going to pee in your front yard, thats hysteria not tied to reality. Or the crime part- bikers don't stop to commit crime. You may just lose some peace and quite in the summer.
This reminds me of the nearly 10 years of opposition by the neighbors of the Radnor Trail. To hear the opponents tell it, burglars, rapists and itinerant negros were going to surf into town on a river of urine and turn their community into a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Of course, now those same opponents now clog the trail, walking 4 abreast with their sport-utility strollers, a dozen kids running unattended and dogs on 100 foot leashes, because it's the only place they can walk in their sidewalkless neighborhood without the imminent fear of being run down by a fleet of SUVs. When first proposed, there was opposition to the SRT in Norristown because it would bring undesirable elements to the community. Ironically, though the one area of the SRT that has problems with crime is in Norristown, the problem comes from inside the community, not the trail. Time and again, these trails have proven to be assets to their communities.

But, yeah....I'll probably pee in their front yard.

Yep. Apparently they've been relieving themselves on the bike path.
