Default 5th Annual Philly Spring Cleanup - Shawmont Ave & Umbria St

    Good Morning, All.

I wanted to let everyone know that I registered a cleanup event in Roxborough for the 5th Annual Philly Spring Cleanup!

It's a lofty goal, but I would like to clean up the area starting at the Eva St/Shawmont Ave intersection and go all the way down to the Umbria St/Domino Ln intersection (by the Sanitation Center). Since this is a high traffic area surrounded by woods, it's easy for it to become littered (which it has); especially since there are only a few visible street residents.

I'm looking for upwards of 25 volunteers, and getting willing volunteers from PhiladelphiaSpeaks.com would be a great start! I understand if you already have plans for that day, but if you're free please consider helping out on April 14th. I plan to use Green Tree Run's Community Center (300 Shawmont Ave) as a meeting point because it has plenty of parking and it's in the middle of the proposed area.

To register, please visit: Philly Streets Department: Philly Spring Cleanup 2012. You will need to click on "Volunteer," find the event by searching in "Roxborough," and then select the "Shawmont/Umbria Cleanup" project to register.

Let's all help make this little area of Philadelphia even better!

    Thanks,
    Tim

    Hi, all.

Just wanted to let everyone know that we still have 22 open spots for this Philly Spring Cleanup project, and you can register right here: Philly Streets Department: ProjectGroups.

Click on the "Shawmont/Umbria Cleanup" project to register. I'm also working on getting the street closed off for a few hours to make things a little safer for this busy road.

If you haven't signed up yet, please do so with us!

    Thanks,
    Tim

You just got 2 more volunteers.

It might help to advertise this at local bike shops (Cadence, Human Zoom, REI in PM, etc.) Lots of cyclists travel this stretch and they know better than anyone how trash, debris, overgrowth, etc. is a big problem. A little cleanup will make the roads safer to travel and I think it will send a message to drivers that people actually DO use and care about the area, and it's not a no-mans-land where you can drive like a maniac and/or dump your trash on the roadside whenever the Domino Lane trash collection site is closed.

Also, for those trying to sign up, don't bother trying to search through the list on the website--it's completely disorganized and the neighborhood filters do not work. Instead, zoom in on the map, click the pin near Shawmont/Umbria, and click "Register" from the description there.

Awesome! Thanks for helping out, PhillyTex.

I totally agree with the bike shop idea. I will be creating a flyer this week and will be hand delivering them to houses/businesses along our cleanup route to get their help. Also, I live in Green Tree Run (along Shawmont Ave and Umbria St) and will hang flyers at all of the mailbox kiosks as well.

If I send you a copy of the flyer, would you mind helping me out with the bike shops? Any help you could provide would be great.

Bump for a good cause. Many hands make light work!

The Rox, do you have an electronic copy of the flyer? I'm not sure if I'll make it out to any of the bike shops before Saturday, but if I do I'll print out a few copies and see if I can leave them on the bulletin boards. I'll PM you my email addy.
