Police chopper over Upper Roxborough last night

We heard a police chopper circling last night for at least 10 minutes, probably around 10:45 or 11 PM. It was close enough to hear inside the house, but too far off in the distance to know exactly what area they were searching. If I had to guess I would say maybe somewhere within a few blocks of Wigard & Ridge.

Anyone know what was up? This isn't something that happens in 19128 very often.

Yeah, we get this a lot over in the lower northeast (my zip code is 19111). Most nights I hear that police chopper (some people call it the "ghetto bird") hovering around. A few times I've actually had the damn spotlight shining right in my window as I was trying to sleep. Talk about big brother. As for the noise, it's kind of annoying but then I always think about the people who live near Philly international and even Northeast regional. They have planes flying just over their homes all day. As for what was happening in Roxborough, I couldn't tell ya.

When I lived in Germantown, it was fairly common. Mt. Airy, much less common than Germantown, but still a few times a year. I've been in Roxborough for 6+ years and this is the first time I can recall it happening here. There are medical helicopters that pass through quite often, but they don't make much noise.

They were circling low (and loud) with the search light on for at least 10 minutes straight on a weeknight after many people in this normally quiet neighborhood are in bed. Something serious was going on. If this was Germantown I would have chalked it up to "business as usual" but as I said, this almost never happens this far out in Roxborough.

Rumor was that the PPD was trying to track down a teen who threatened his Mom with a knife. Not sure if he was caught, but the 5th District Captain will be at a public meeting Thursday night. I guess folks could ask him.

Fifth District Police Captain John Cerrone is scheduled to attend the Central Roxborough Civic Association meeting March 1. The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m., and is held at Leverington Presbyterian Church.
