    Default Take out & delivery

I'm new to the area and I was hoping some people here can give me some good places for hot wings in upper roxborough/andorra area. I really can't seem to find good wings - the ones I've had are sugary or maybe it was too much butter. Whatever it is, it just doesn't taste like a good buffalo sauce.

So let me know of some of your favorite places for hot wings, as well as your other favorite take out & delivery places in the area. I've already had chubby's - great steaks!

Without question you have to get wings from union jacks (corner of Umbria and Foutain sts.). Pizza - roma's...... Cheesesteak - dallesandro's ...... Hoagie- Danny's deli....... Stromboli - dantonio's or Pina's .....

I agree with Reberson on all counts. Union Jack's is more of a bar than a take out place, but you can still order food to-go. You can also grab a 6-pack of a decent craft beer on your way out. (or you can just eat you wings there and have a couple beers. UJ's is a pretty cool bar.)

I would also add Barry's Steaks to the list. Barry used to work at Dallessandro's until he opened his own shop. Less crowded than Dalle's and he offers delivery.

This is the first time I heard of Danny's Deli. I'll have to give them a try. I don't pass that stretch of Ridge too often, so I didn't notice they had opened. Another great hoagie place is Lennie's in central Rox. Be forewarned that they have strange hours and serve a mostly lunchtime crowd. Of course, you can't go wrong with Primo's either.

Thanks for the tips! I heard about union jacks and drive by there on my way home from work. I'll have to check that out.

As far as hoagies, I was not too impressed with Danny's. Perhaps I'm spoiled being originally from south philly, but when I ask for a hoagie with everything on it, I expect peppers. They even have a little form they fill out that has all of these ingredients, and when I get home I noticed they didn't circle peppers and pickles - why not just let me fill out that form if you are gonna use one? Also, its like a 7 or 8 dollar sandwich. Granted, there's a ton of good quality meat on it, but it is hard to eat. They should drop the price and cut the meat in half and put the standard fixings on a hoagie. It was tasty, but overpriced and they got my "everything on it" order wrong. They aren't the only place up here that doesn't seem to consider peppers standard fare on a hoagie though.

    Thanks again for the tips!

Lenny's hoagies all the way. Delicious and an excellent price. Hours can be odd as stated. Barry's is also good for cheesesteaks with the advantage of easier parking and more room to wait inside.

imho Jack's has gone downhill a bit. Sometimes they seem like they're going thru the motions & I swear one time I got wings from there & it tasted like they poured a big bottle of hot wing sauce from Walmart onto my wings. I've gone less often since then. Fiesta Pizza (next to Dalessandro's) has pretty good wings, myb not as good, but consistent. Pina's in Andorra has good pizza.

Who puts pickles on a hoagie? That's like John Kerry asking for swiss on a cheesesteak.

Yea, when you buy them at Wawa or in Bumblefreak, PA. No self-respecting hoagie shop owner AUTOMATICALLY puts them on a hoagie.

Every place I ever got hoagies in south philly puts them on unless you tell them not to. I imagine every one of these places have been doing it wrong for decades? The history of south philly with respect to sandwiches lends me to believe they have been doing it right all this time versus someone's opinion from germantown - no offense.

Thanks, Mama, for lettin me know where Lenny's is!

Wow dude, you couldn't be more wrong. Check out Greenmans Deli in Mayfair, been around since the 50's I'm sure. I went back & read the post which caused you to make your off topic self opinion, and "With everything" includes pickles. I would imagine "Hold the pickles" or "No pickles" is a very common phrase at any shop, but needs to be said by those who do not like. Any good old deli had a big old pickel barrel in it!

Agreed. However, I'll give Zesto's credit for convenience. They have a pretty efficient on-line ordering and delivery system.

I think most people will find that the best places don't offer delivery (Alex's Pizza is another example). But for those days when you just don't feel like leaving the house, it's good to have a few alternatives.

+1, and their food is consistent as well, which seems to be rare.

Every other place I've used will screw up orders and the food will be all over the place, Zesto's is decent, quick and consistent..

Agree on UJ for wings. CJ & Eck's used to have decent wings as well but I haven't had them there in a while.

Have to add Deke's if you're looking for good BBQ take-out (no delivery unfortunately and fair warning: cash only, but they have an ATM on premises). Tommy Gunns is ok, not mind-blowing, but fine in a pinch. For the love of god stay away from Phoebe's.

D'allesandro's is good but TBH I'm more of a fan of Barry's. I guess they're pretty comparable though.

You're not going to find any GREAT sushi places in the area (that I've encountered). The only real option that I know of for sushi delivery is shan chuan in East Falls. It's just ok. If you're willing to do take-out you're definitely better off going to Hikaru.

I know there are a ton of great pizza places in the area, but lately I've been going to Riverside when I just need a cheese pie (mainly for nights when there are a bunch of people coming over and I just want something that will please everyone). Plenty of cheese, and their slices are huge and pretty tasty.
A little nonsense, now and then, is relished by the wisest men.
