I would be excited about this because I LOVE BEER, bad, but for most beers the Foodery is ridiculously overpriced. As in, I could go to Jersey, pay gas, pay tolls, and still get a better deal. Or Delaware. Or, probably, Colorado.

It's a shame too, because Foodery type takeout stores are filling a huge niche for those of us who don't want to pay $30-$40 for 24 of the same thing at a distributor, or travel.

I know the distributors are fighting to keep current PA beer laws in tact but if any of them are reading this thread, or give a #$%^ YOU GUYS ARE LOSING MONEY. I am taking my business elsewhere. I've "experimented" on 1 too many craft brew cases that I wound up not really caring for. You guys are dinosaurs.

A better bet is the Whole Foods in Plymouth for those who drive. Decent selection of sixers at Jersey prices: Whole Foods Market Plymouth Meeting Beer Store - Beer Menu Philadelphia

The solution is to start a beer-swap (like how housewives will have a "cookie-swap"). We have a work one about every two months. Everyone picks either a beer that they already like, or would like to try, and brings a case. We divvy it up, and everyone leaves with two bottles each of twelve different beers, or three bottles of eight different beers, depending on how many participants. Even the Jersey-dwellers join in despite being able to easily buy smaller amounts of beer.

That's a pretty righteous idea. The problem, I guess, would be to find reliable enough participants.

I know somebody who did this over X-Mas. The idea was like one of those 25 days til X-Mas calendars (forget what they are called) and they were all supposed to drink 1 of 25 dif. beers each day. They divided the weeks into styles- IPA's Porters/Stouts, Ales/Wheat and Other. Sounded pretty cool.

    You're definitely onto something though...

Take that Main Street and screw the MDC! Welcome to Roxborough Foodery!

This should really illustrate the problem with Main Street. When the Foodery wanted to open there it turned into a protracted fight with NIMBYs until they said forget about it. Now compare that with the Foodery's decision to open in Roxborough - no hearings, no demands, no hassle, just open arms. (and it's not like Main Street has so few vacancies that it can afford to be so selective...)

This reminds me of when NIMBY's held up Agiato's opening for nearly a year over the proposed closing time. During the same period, the owners of Tria opened something similar in University City in a matter of 5 months.

In this case Manayunk's loss is Roxborough's gain. Maybe this starts a trend?

Garrett - The beer distributor in Chestnut Hill allows customers to take a one beer from their case (crafts only) and exchange it for a beer another customer left. So I bought a case of Troegs and exchanged one for a Yards that someone else left. Pretty cool!

The beer distributor on Green Lane has a beer exchange as well. We had an awesome Wit and traded a Troegs from our purchase. Great idea!...and on Friday's they have beer tastings from local brewery's

I was thinking the same thing. This is great for the Ridge in Roxborough. With easy parking in the lot on DuPont, I think this location will do a great business. I know I'll be a regular.

Meanwhile this would have been a reason for me to go to Main Street, which is something I do rarely at this point (say once per month). Instead it's another reason to go to the Ridge, which I already do twice a week or so. I go there for business, but this will help it become more of a destination.

I'm with you Billy. I'm really excited for this. I just hope it doesn't hurt business for the Lenny's and Mina's around there. Hopefully it will just bring people the neighborhood that wouldn't already head to the Ridge. Great news for the neighborhood!...and another place I can walk to :-)

I stopped by the RDC the other day to pick up a recycling bin and was asking a few questions. This may take a few months (many months) but I can guarantee my wife and I will be spending time and money there. We continue to support local business even if it is more expensive. I am on Leverington and this is a short walk for us. CANNOT WAIT!

This just screams convenience--people will be able to hop off the bus, or park in one of the large, free public lots (Leverington or Dupont), grab a couple of cold, high-quality beers, and either get takeout food or hit up a BYO restaurant along the Ridge. That's an experience you can't get in many neighborhoods in the city.

There may be some people who would have otherwise gone to Lenny's, Mina's, etc. and will now just get beer & food from the Foodery instead, but I think they will be in the minority. It's more likely that people who would have skipped a trip to the Ridge altogether will now be motivated to go there, hit up the Foodery for beer, and patronize one of the established restaurants in the same trip.

I guess some of the actual bars in the area could see some competition, but they do enough to scare people away as it is, so apparently they aren't dying for new business.

It's at least hour out of my day to drive somewhere like Plymouth Meeting or NJ. I work for myself, so my time does have an actual dollar value on it. I'd rather pay a little more for the beer if it can be a quick errand.

What about carbon footprint? What about how awful it is for your body to sit in an automobile? If you like your body, you should try to spend as little time as possible in an automobile. This of course is above and beyond any time value of money analysis. It's also awful for your wallet to sit in an automobile.

yeah, lol at holding up Agiato's. I can just see a bunch of drunk rowdy people spilling out of pitcher's at 2 pm and stumbling into pseudo-upscale wine bar to tie a few on. Please. That decision pretty much proves that MDC is a bunch of lost little lambs with no idea what's going on at all. Agiato's demographic is exactly what you want to attract to Manayunk if you're looking for main st to become more mature. Not complaining if it ends up being a boon for Roxborough, though.

Great news for the Ridge! Keep developing the area please...I need my property value to go up. Getting a real joint in the Coyles location is next.
