He was the fourth of seven children born to Clement and Mildred Mathis.
His father performed briefly in vaudeville and exposed all of the Mathis siblings to music.
Before he entered his teens, young John received vocal lessons from Connie Cox in exchange
for performing chores around her home. When he entered San Francisco State College he
originally had planned to become a physical education instructor.
In 1954, Johnny enrolled at San Francisco State College with the intention
of being an English and physical education teacher.
While there, Johnny set a high jump record of 6' 5-1/2"
which broke classmate and basketball great Bill Russell's high jump record.
This feat is still on the College's Top 15 list,
and was only 2 inches short of the Olympic record of the time.
Just as when he was in high school, Johnny's name was frequently mentioned in the
sports sections of the Northern California newspapers.
He was often referred to as "the best all-around athlete to come out of the SF Bay Area."
While in college he began performing at a small local bar called The International Settlement,
where he met performers Maya Angelou and Joan Weldon.
Later performances at a club called The Blackhawk
caught the attention of Columbia Records producer George Avakian.
When Avakian called for Mathis to make his first recording, the young singer and then
college track star had to make a unique decision: whether to record or to tryout for the
1956 Olympics held in Melbourne, Australia.
He chose to make his first single 'Wonderful, Wonderful'.
To date he has recorded over 100 albums with sales in excess of 180.0 million.
Just two years after his first recordings, his 1958 record album "Johnny's Greatest Hits"
(Columbia Records) started the 'Greatest Hits' trend for recording artists and record companies;
every record company thereafter began to release ‘Greatest Hits’ albums for their recording artists.
Baltimore Bob had about 50 Greatest Hits CD's stolen by his ex.
Track and Field Tournament at San Francisco State University,
the Johnny Mathis Invitational is named in his honor.
As of 2004, he has had the longest stay of any popular artist with Columbia Records to date,
having recorded for them almost exclusively since 1956.
Mathis has had a string of hits, all on Columbia records,
stretching from the 1950s through the 1980s and beyond.
Hit singles include 'A Certain Smile,' 'Chances Are,' 'Gina,' 'Misty,'
'What Will Mary Say?,' 'Wonderful! Wonderful!,'
and 'Too Much, Too Little, Too Late' (Duet with Denise Williams).
Hit albums include 'Faithfully,' 'Heavenly,' "Johnny's Greatest Hits," 'Merry Christmas,'
'Open Fire, Two Guitars,' 'Up, Up, and Away,' 'Warm,' and 'Wonderful! Wonderful!.'
An avid golfer, he hit his fifth hole-in-one at the 176 yard,
16th hole at the Riviera Country Club in April 2004.

My #1 Celebrity Birthday Person for October 9th is
John Lennon (Would have been 69) 1940 - Died age 40
Born 9 October 1940 - Liverpool, Merseyside, England, UK
Date of death 8 December 1980 - New York, New York, USA. (homicide)
Birth name: John Winston Lennon / Height: 5' 9½" (1.77 m)
John was the same height as Baltimore Bob.
In the mid 1950s he formed his first band The Quarrymen
(after Quarry Bank High School, which he attended),
who with the addition of Paul McCartney and George Harrison, later became the Beatles.
The Beatles experimented with names throughout 1959.
At one point they were called "Johnny and the MoonDogs".
After some years of performing in Liverpool and Hamburg Germany,
Beatlemania erupted in England and Europe in 1963 after the release of
their singles 'Love Me Do' and 'Please Please Me.
The next year the Beatles flew to America to appear on the Ed Sullivan Show,
and Beatlemania spread worldwide.
Queen Elizabeth granted all four Beatles M.B.E. medals in 1965,
for import revenues from their record sales;
John returned his four years later, as part of an antiwar statement.
John and the Beatles continued to tour and perform live until 1966,
when protests over his calling the Beatles phenomenon 'more popular than Jesus'
and the frustrations of touring made the band decide to quit the road.
They devoted themselves to studio work, recording and releasing albums such as
Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Magical Mystery Tour, and the White Album.
Spouses: Yoko Ono (20 March 1969 - 8 December 1980) (his death) 1 child
Cynthia Lennon (25 August 1962 - 8 November 1968) (divorced) 1 child

Father, with Cynthia Lennon, of Julian Lennon.
Trade mark: Sarcastic wit, and later granny glasses.
The first instrument he learned to play was the harmonica.
He was given his U.S. Resident Alien registration (his 'green card')
on the bicentennial of the American revolution: Sunday, July 4, 1976.
Rolling Stone magazine was launched in November 1967, Lennon made the first cover.
He also spent little time on remixing with his solo records;
latter-day remasters of his solo albums have been carefully remixed,
bringing out many subtleties in the music buried or lost in the original mixes.
Although his music with and after the Beatles usually featured the latest technical
and sound innovations, he was all-thumbs when it came to most audio/visual equipment,
usually depended on a knowing technician or assistant to give him the sound or look he wanted.
John was Best Man at actor Peter Boyle’s wedding in 1977:
* Peter Boyle (I) – Died age 71
* Date of Birth October 18th 1935 - Norristown, PA.
* Date of Death December 12th 2006 - New York City, New York.
* Height: 6' 2" (1.88 m) / Irish American.
* Spouse: Loraine Alterman Boyle / Birth Name: Loraine Alterman
* Spouse: Peter Boyle (1977 - 12 December 2006) (his death) 2 children
His murder was first announced to the world by U.S. sportscaster 'Howard Cosell'
during 'NFL Monday Night Football' (1970). According to Frank Gifford, Lennon
met Ronald Reagan when both were guests on 'Monday Night Football' in the mid-1970s.
After appearing on the show, he gave Gifford and Howard Cosell
each a complete collection of Beatles albums, which he autographed.
Assassinated as he returned from the recording studio Monday, December 8, 1980,
outside the Dakota, his apartment building, by Mark David Chapman, a crazed fan.
Yoko Ono signed over the royalties of his song 'Imagine', in purpetuity,
to Amnesty International, a world-wide organization devoted to political prisoners.
The Cranberries' song "I Just Shot John Lennon"
explored the day of his murder at the hands of Mark Chapman.
An actor named Mark Lindsay Chapman was supposed to play the part of John Lennon
in a TV-movie account of Lennon's life and death, but lost the part
because he has the same name (Mark Chapman) as Lennon's killer.
* John and Yoko: A Love Story (1985) (TV) & Mark McGann as John Lennon.
** Mark Lindsay Chapman later portrayed Lennon in Chapter 27 (2007).
Won 1971 Oscar for ‘Best Music, Original Song Score’ for: Let It Be (1970)
Shared with: Paul McCartney, George Harrison & Ringo Starr. To "The Beatles".
Beatles were not present at the awards ceremony. Quincy Jones accepted the award on their behalf.
In 2001 the Liverpool Airport was renamed the John Lennon Airport after him.
Posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (as a solo artist) in 1994.

(1909, died as infant), Elliott (1910), Franklin Jr. (1914) and John (1916).
First lady of the United States (1933-1945).
Quit the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) because they wouldn't allow
an African American singer named Marian Anderson to sing for them.
She later set up a performance for Marian to sing at the Jefferson Memorial
and 75,000 people attended.
Was given horrible medical advice, even for 1960s standards.
When she first started feeling the affects of tuberculosis, she saw her doctors.
They did standard PPD test. (Test is still used today to diagnose Tb.)
Even though she received a +PPD result (meaning she has or previously had Tb)
they dismissed the findings, and put her on steroids.
She left the country for a goodwill tour of Europe.
When she returned, she was worse, and the Tb had taken over multiple organ systems.
If she had been put on antibiotics that were available, she would have been cured.
By giving her steroids, they compromised her immune system, and assisted the Tb in
becoming worse. Had she done nothing, she would have been better off,
and had a better chance at survival.
This is a huge medical blunder even for the standards of the day.
When FDR was first elected,
the Secret Service were not yet protecting the lives of First Family.
She was issued a gun for her own protection, and then they
issued her a badge so she was legally allowed to carry the gun.

In 1973, she landed a job as a Breck shampoo model.
In 1976, she was offered to star in a new pilot for a planned television series,
entitled "Charlie's Angels" (1976).
The pilot was slick and the show was an instant hit when it debuted on Sept 22, 1976
on ABC. Smith has the distinct honor of being the only Angel *not* to leave the show
in its entire five-season run (1976-1981).
