His father performed briefly in vaudeville and exposed all of the Mathis siblings to music.
Before he entered his teens, young John received vocal lessons from Connie Cox in exchange
for performing chores around her home. When he entered San Francisco State College he
originally had planned to become a physical education instructor.
In 1954, Johnny enrolled at San Francisco State College with the intention
of being an English and physical education teacher.
While there, Johnny set a high jump record of 6' 5-1/2"
which broke classmate and basketball great Bill Russell's high jump record.
This feat is still on the College's Top 15 list,
and was only 2 inches short of the Olympic record of the time.
Just as when he was in high school, Johnny's name was frequently mentioned in the

When she returned, she was worse, and the Tb had taken over multiple organ systems.
If she had been put on antibiotics that were available, she would have been cured.
By giving her steroids, they compromised her immune system, and assisted the Tb in
becoming worse. Had she done nothing, she would have been better off,
and had a better chance at survival.
This is a huge medical blunder even for the standards of the day.
When FDR was first elected,
the Secret Service were not yet protecting the lives of First Family.
She was issued a gun for her own protection, and then they
issued her a badge so she was legally allowed to carry the gun.
