    Default Bat Mitzvah question

i got an invitation to my big boss's daughter's bat mitzvah (the invite is VERY fancy - when i got it i thought it was a wedding invite and couldn't figure out who the heck was getting married. thought maybe i had a random cousin getting hitched...)

anywho, the ceremony is at 9:30 am followed by a Kiddish Luncheon. Then there is a separate card that indicated the festivities follow at 6:00 pm at a fancy schmancy place for cocktails, dinner and dancing.

my invited was addressed to me and a guest.

my question: the dude has a class on Saturday mornings so he would not be able to attend the ceremony or lunch. would it be inappropriate to take him to the evening celebration?

for this type of evening, is a cocktail dress appropriate (like i would wear to a wedding?). i figured a "church dress" for the ceremony and a nicer dress for the evening would be okay. and well, i'd love a reason to buy a new dress

is it safe to assume that cold hard cash is an appreciated gift?

While it is not preferable, you will most likely be shocked when you see that there are two or three times the number of people at the evening party than at services. Unfortunately, it is no longer frowned upon not to attend services.

Cocktail dress is perfect for the evening, and money in multiples of $18 (e.g. 18, 36, 54, etc.) is traditional.

Yes, it would best if you don't skip the ceremony though.

    Yes, just be tasteful.

Absolutely, multiples of 18 are traditional and considered good luck.

If need to impress your boss give his daughter a bat mitzvah gift.
Money is appropriate but gifts leave memory.
I never remember the names of the people that give money.
But, I remember when someone gives a gift.
That might be too far for a Bat Mitzvah unless you need to impress your boss.
    Just a suggestion.

Toxigal, between my two teenagers I have been to many Bar and Bat Mitzvahs in the past few years (including their own). Believe me, some of the 13-year-olds attending wear far sluttier dresses than the one you posted! I've been shocked by it, really, and would find it depressing if I didn't get so much amusement watching them try to walk in heels taller than they are....

Another idea as a gift, is make a donation in the girl's honor to grow a tree in Israel..somebody did that for my niece and she was really touched..another gift she got was a membership to the Holocaust Museum in Washington..she loved it and it gave her and her family an opportunity to visit and she will always remember that as a gift..

An envelope with cash is the best gift.
A tree in Israel is almost like having a star named after you from the star registry.

Could only see middle dress. Wouldn't consider it slutty for a cocktail dress.

Give cash, buy the dress and take Tylenol before you go. A bunch of 13-year-olds at a party has got to be one layer of hell.

Don't forget to wear a giant crucifix necklace.

i was talking to bossman today. he said the venue is large and divided so that the kids can have a kiddy good time without being too bothersome for the adults.
