Never, EVER leave it unsecured. I personally know two people in my neighborhood who unexplicably made it a snap for thieves by leaving their scooters chain-free overnight in front of their homes.

Did you get your bike on the Avenue? I would love to get one.

We live in the same neighborhood ;-). We might even know eachother in real life.

I spent too much money on my bike to leave it unsecured.

Yes I bought it on the avenue at Philadelphia scooters. Those guys were really great. They know a lot.

I think we probably have met. Did you used to come to the EPX meetings? I was their recording secretary for six years and used to sit up front @ our general meetings with the rest of the board.

Anyways, good luck with your new bike!

When making turns on the street, always take a look in the direction you wish to go. (I did learn that one the hard way...)

Be aware of old trolley tracks !

If you've never had formal cycle training, you might want to read up on the concept of "countersteering". Unlike cars, to turn a motorcycle/scooter, you turn the bars in the *opposite* direction that you want to turn. This countersteering action causes the bike to lean over, which then *really* makes the bike turn. In other words, bikes turn by leaning, not by "steering". Here's a video that explains it pretty well:

The sooner you embrace the notion of countersteering, the sooner you'll start having safer and more enjoyable rides.

If you or a passenger is wearing regular sunglasses, one turn of the head may cause the wind to rip them off.

    No Flip Flops.

What kind did you get? I've always wanted one but I've had at least one child to drive around since 1980. Maybe when this last one leaves for college in 2015????

I'll add to the no flip-flops rule, no wife beaters, either. Road rash is painful. And wear a helmet!

I actually thought about getting a scooter when I lived in CC. Then I started reading about how basically, you're still going 35 mph on a bike, so you'll want to wear riding gear all the time. Which kind of kills the convenience one imagines.

Hubby's line for that is "remember Harry Potter's Invisible Cloak? Make pretend you're wearing that when you're on the road and that cars just don't see you."

Please do not ride in the bike lane or on the sidewalks. I've seen both occur. Otherwise have fun! Girls on scooters look awesome.

I agree except for one thing. Anyone on a scooter, motorcycle, car, bike should look BOTH directions!

I still ride my bike to work most days so I recognize the sanctity of the bike lane. It's not for motor vehicles.

Thanks! What I really don't understand is jogging in the bikes lanes and playing chicken with me when they have the sidewalk right there.

Some rules on safe operation of scooters I learned in Rome:
    1. Make sure to take advantage of every square inch of room in between cars so you can be first at the light.
    2. You are mobile enough to avoid pedestrians so slowing down is not necessary if they are in the crosswalk.
    3. Do not break eye contact if someone happens to look at you.
    4. You can park everywhere, even on top of other scooters.
