    Default F--- Facebook!

As Facebook grows, millions say, 'no, thanks' - Yahoo! News

    Seriously, **** Facebook!

Maybe there is another thread like this on PS. This one is mine.

Why allow Mark Zuckerberg to hold dominion over your life? Why continue to 'friend' people you had a damn good reason not to bring or keep in your life? Why be an open book to strangers who, really, should not know anything about you?

I know that people like me, who dumped Facebook, sound like recovering alcoholics; or worse, people who found Jesus.

    But, I AM happier!

Facebook has power because we, as a collective society, gave it to them. Will we ever take it back?

Funny, my wife is a FB guru who used it for gaming for the longest time, although she no longer does any of that, and rarely uses it at all anymore.

I never really saw a point to FB, Twitter, or other social media, save for LinkedIn. I only registered a FB account when PS went down several years back. I think I've been on it maybe a dozen times since, if that.

However, I am suspicious of FB's numbers. 900 million? I know a lot of people who've used FB once in a while to look up someone, mostly potential employees or marketing leads, but there seem to be a lot of dormant accounts. I suspect the actual numbers of regular users is a small fraction of what FB claims. Chevrolet seems to be on to something, as they just pulled a major marketing campaign:

Last month I suddenly found myself less than interested in what Washington Post articles my "friends" have been reading, slightly bored with YouTube videos of funny cats posted by various moms and aunts, and realizing that the 320 million baby pictures on my News Feed all pretty much look the same. So I disabled my account.

Then I realized how often people use FB for practical reasons these days, and were upset that there was no way to get a hold of me. I logged back in, and me voilà. It's open in another tab as I write, God knows why.

Facebook can be fun and useful, if you don't let it take over your life. :-)

I think it's a great way to communicate with friends and relatives I don't see very often, without having to spend hours on the phone. I've never been big into gaming, so that side of it doesn't appeal to me at all.

But it does take over lives! And many of the people you do not keep in touch with had a damn good reason for being kept at a distance.

    @ OffenseTaken,

First, your PS name would be a great name for a race horse.

Second, I refute the notion that Facebook is a great tool for practical or profession reasons. We somehow became the richest, most industrial nation in history without this crack pipe in our lives.

Oh, don't get me wrong: I didn't say it was a great tool for that, or even a good one. The fact is, people use it that way, even for some semi-important, time-sensitive things. I'm afraid it's as hard to get rid of these days as a cell phone (which I would also love to ditch).

The whole article is rather silly. It is trying to make the point that because there isn't 100% saturation, it is doomed. Ridiculous premise.

Scary premise that Facebook is now an embedded part of our lives. Why does a website get to hold such sway over anyone?

Can any of you disband your account for a whole week? Not get rid of it...just deactivate?

No cheating. No sock puppet accounts. No looking at your Facebook page over a friend's shoulder.

Can you go a whole week without it in any form or interval? Prove it.

My ex filed a petition to enjoin me from mentioning him negatively on facebook even though he can't see my page and doesn't know how to use a computer. People are crazy over facebook.

I could, but I don't want to. I like sharing news articles and participating in discussions around them.

I wish I had your friends. The closest I ever get to this is when somebody posts an article from HuffPo like "This County Executive in Arkansas Says Gay People Are Witches," and everyone "Likes" it. Then there's a discussion of the ambiguity of the "Like" button ("Where's the 'dislike' button," etc.), and that's it.

South Park had a re-run of their facebook episode last night-- what fun!

use fb as a fun tool to connect with friends/family that you have not seen in years or to keep in touch with present day close friends. Don't expect anything more.. And you won't be let down..

I deactivated my account for about 6 months. I only reactivated it because a friend had his first child and it was an easy way to get the announcement and baby photos. I'll deactivate it again in about 6 months.

Pretty much this. I use facebook to set up gatherings with friends (parties, birthdays, tournaments, etc.) and see how distant relatives are doing for the most part. I also like instagram I will admit, but I'd be taking pictures anyway, Instagram just auto-shares them with my friends, which can be fun. I actually like seeing the pictures they post when they go to concerts, happy hours, etc. Particularly if I don't get to see them very often. Agreed on the gaming stuff, all the -villes and Zynga sh*t annoys the hell out of me.
A little nonsense, now and then, is relished by the wisest men.

I think you should start a thread about him here.

"MY EX - NAME IS A BASTARD!"

    that would be very interesting.
