Default Philadelphia fan from the UK

Hello everyone, I wasn't sure if there was an "introduce yourself" page on here so, thought I'd create one. Appoligies if there is. I was born, and still live in the UK, and although I've never been to Philadelphia, I have always loved the place, and it has always been a dream of mine to one day go there. I registered to this forum as I have an interest in the city, as well as the culture. I'm aware that I'm probably the only Brit on here, but it goes to show how much of amazing city you guys are lucky to live in.

Thanks; we (or most of us) also think we're lucky. You should converse with PhillyAggie, who felt the same way (when he was in Texas) and eventually found a job and a home here.

Are you referencing the city, or the inevitable level of discourse we will arrive at around page 2?

I may be wrong, but I smell a spammer shill making nice to get post count up before he starts dropping ads all over the place. Most Europeans never even heard of Philly, let alone loving it without ever being here.

Either that or some autistic kid, like Shane Botwin in Weeds when he starts obsessing over Pittsburgh.

Not the case any more. The GPTMC has really done its homework here. Foreign visitors to Philadelphia have been steadily climbing, and climbing faster than the overall number of tourists, for a while now.

I have seen positive news reports from and about this city on a number of foreign news sites (e.g., bbc.co.uk) that I probably would not have seen such stories on a few years ago.

And then you have people like Rene, the owner of Rim Cafe in the Italian Market. He's from Nice. What do you think he says about this place when he goes back to France each summer? (Hint: He absolutely LOVES it here. And we who appreciate his shop love him back, as we did last night at his combination birthday bash/30th anniversary* party.)

And so what if this guy's a Shane Botwin? We should encourage this kind of attention and affection.

This just underscores something I say all the time about this city: Philadelphia is underrated, and nobody underrates it more than the natives. Don't believe me? Go look at this year's Travel + Leisure "America's Favorite Cities" results. Philly ranks #1 or #2 in several categories and in the top 10 in several others. In all but two or three of these where our estimation of our city closely matches the visitors', the visitors think more highly of this place than we do.

*The "30th anniversary" is that of the opening of the original Rim store in Nice. The one on 9th Street has been around for about 10 years.

    Yeah, ok.

    I'll bet $20 it's a shill account.

That was my initial reaction, but there are no links in his signature (he doesn't even have one) and, even more to the point, the post is grammatically correct. So, I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt -- hey, PhillyAggie did the same thing and look, now he's really one of us.

Yeah, that's what shills do. They post legitimately a bunch of times in order to get their post count up as many boards block the posting of images, urls, or signatures until a certain number or posts. Board mods are also sometimes vigilant against new posters so they post seemingly legit posts every once in a while before going on a spam fest.

But, I'm speculating (with $20 backing it). Could be he's just nuts

Most of the shills on here don't have the patience for multiple postings just to gain credibility. They dive right in with the sell.

Boy, didn't realize how deep your Negadelphianness ran until now. Tell ya what. Spend a few years in Kansas City, then get back to me.

I have no idea what a "shill" is, but I'm not one of them. I'm definitely legit. I just signed up to this forum to see what's going on with the city, the people and the sports. I'm a fan of the Phillies, Flyers and Eagles. Not much of an NBA fan though. Hopefully one day, when I have enough money, I'll go there and visit the Liberty Bell and the rest of Independence Hall, Tony Luke's, CBP, the list goes on, but it won't be a while yet as my girlfriend is 4 months pregnant. So a lot of saving is needed. Those who said positive things, many thanks. And I'll hit one of you up for a guided tour of your city when I can go.

Be aware that Philadelphia's roast pork sandwiches are much better than its cheesesteaks, despite everything you've heard.
