COLUMBIA — An anonymous tip led to the arrest Tuesday night of two MU students in connection with last Friday's scattering of cotton balls in front of the MU's Gaines/Oldham Black Culture Center.
Sean D. Fitzgerald, 19, and Zachary E. Tucker, 21, were arrested on suspicion of second-degree tampering. Police are pursuing the charge as a hate crime, making it a felony.
It was definitely a stupid thing to do, but how could it be a crime to scatter cotton balls on the ground? And a felony? Next time someone makes a racial comment towards me I'm calling the police.
Was is stupid? Yes. Racist? Yes. I have always thought a hate crime involved violence of some kind. I don't think this should be a hate crime or even a crime at all. At the most, they should be given a citation for littering. MU would be justified in expelling the students too but they should not go to jail for what they did.

I can hear the conversation now...
"Hey kid....what are you in for....murder?"
"Nope."
"Rape?"
"Nope."
"Well what could have given you such a stiff deal then?"
"Cotton balls...."

How about terrorism ?
Think any of those black students might have felt threatened or afraid ?
The first act was cotton balls, but who knows what it could have escalated to the next time these creeps felt like harassing some black kids.
It isn't funny, so I wouldn't believe it was a joke, and I'm pretty sure the people that did are full of hate for black people, because they wouldn't have done something like this if they wanted to live in peace and harmony.
I don't get it...This story just has to be one of the weirdest things I ever heard, after seeing that segment about the mom who considers the dad taking the kids to church assault and traumatizing. XD

So what about those Asian kids in south philly? Would you classify that as terrorism also? I dont see any of their attackers being treated the same way by the law.
Oh yes but thats completely different....the Asians werent targeted because they were different....or where they?

I believe what is happening at SPHS is also a hate crime and the people doing it should be charged as such.
the fact is that its just easier to call white people racists. you can't call the black kids racists even though they are bullying others at SPHS because of their race. try convincing any black person that some of their people are racist. many of them feel entitled to act that way because "they were oppressed for so many years"
If those black bigots had dropped fortune cookies in front of the Asian kids do you think they would be arrested for hate crimes? Nah, just easier to beat them up and make up some story about Asians attacking a black kid in a wheelchair. This is the double standard of politically correctness. Liberals are like the pigs on Animal Farm, they claim equality for all, but only allow a their inner circle to enjoy it.
Cotton plantations were the largest southern industry and was the largest exploiter of slave labor.

Where has political affiliation come into this? You sincerely believe that all liberals think like that?
This was stupid and the kids should get in trouble, but the concept of a hate crime is just positive discrimination, but discrimination nonetheless. The government should be color-blind.

Probably. But being full of hate is not a crime. Scattering some cotton balls is at best some sort of misdemeanor like littering or petty vandalism.
I'm not taking a position on this particular crime (or not crime) yet, but...
I suppose next you'll say that burning a cross is just "unlawful disposal of old wood within city limits"?
You must be trolling for a quarrel, because you aren't dumb enough to equate cotton balls and cross burning. They're in the same spirit, maybe, but cross burning was used for a long time as a threat by a violent organization, and there are now specific regulations against it. What would you say would be worse in front of your house: A large burning cross or cotton balls?
