Default Is the City Ready to have a Female Mayor?

PhillyMag wasting no time to speculate with the Daily News:

he next race isn’t until 2015, but that hasn’t stopped some from speculating that Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown’s star will have risen enough by that point for her to become a legitimate contender to succeed Mayor Michael Nutter
    Blondie! From hoofer to mayor?

So after you read that campaign ad from the Inky, I don't have a problem with the next mayor being any gender...as long as they help us do what we need to do to keep this city focus...

Having her run will keep things interesting, though I'm about as likely to support her as I was Chaka Fattah.

The first version of her nutritional and calorie information law was awful, as an example. For all you small government types, she is likely to be the most "nanny state" candidate in the race.

Are you crazy? Yes, yes we could do much worse.

    And most likely will.

That she's running pretty much means Fattah is staying in D.C. indefinitely. And if you liked him as a mayoral candidate, you'll love her that much more.

I imagine she will be strongly supported by many of the supporters of the late Councilman David Cohen, in terms of tax policy, etc.

Of women on council, I'd probably prefer Maria Quinones Sanchez.

If any candidate for citywide office can't win for demographic reasons, it won't be because it's a woman.

Her mentor is Chaka Fattah. I don't need to know anything else than that.

Stan Shapiro is probably very excited about her candidacy. She won't be taking on Brett Mandell as policy advisor on business taxes.

And the fact Nutter was holding fundraisers for him too.

So after you read that campaign ad from the Inky,
Yeah, I thought it was a rather curious article. I was curious what the news worthiness of it was. After a couple paragraphs, I was wondering why Catherine Lucey was writing a "put out feelers" piece for her. I haven't noticed Lucey doing something like that before.

So it really has nothing to do with a woman being a mayor.

Did we all just forget that the last Republican candidate was a woman? Or does she not count because she didn't have a D next to her name and thus can not be considered a "main line candidate"?

But she was an author of a totally symbolic City Council resolution pledging support for a woman's right to choose as I recall. You didn't see any men on council proposing that exact completely symbollic piece of legislation.

The key phrase is 'legitimate contender'. I didn't see anyone assert that this would be the first woman candidate for mayor.
