Default Is the Sheriffs Office Ever Going To Get Their Site Back Up?

    Philadelphia Sheriff - Under Construction

So they knocked their site offline about 2 months ago and still nothing. This was the only place to get consolidated records of when sales were going on and when the notices were due to be published.

-1 for transparency. Since the office rotates notices between the Public Record, DN and Inky--it's like finding a needle in a haystack to know what's going on unless you got a subscrip to RealtyTrac.

This coupled with Sheriff Williams begging Council for an Escalade and then more budget dollars doesn't bode well.

I believe the site was run and hosted by the people that are being charged with crimes, so guessing it is in a bit of a flux.

5 people (that I know of), and it was working fine until begging of March.

I'm guessing Jewell is paying someone to turn it into a fanclub site? Click "+Like" if you think Jewell should get a flashy Escalade?

I believe Jewell said in the papers that he wanted like a zillion more dollars from the city for a couple different things. I imagine the first thing he would want is a gold plated Escalade, but he def said that he wants money to rebuild the site. So, he may be intentionally taking it down till he gets money, which will probably be never.

Well it's made the dates of sheriff sales very invisible unless you read 3 different newspapers a week.

That's the legal requirement. So now you're criticizing them for following the letter of the law? Websites are not required for 'transparency'. Don't like the law? Change it-but newspapers are exactly the requirement.

"Now, too?!" First off-I don't defend anyone. You, amongst others, don't seem to get it. I was in the bureaucracy known as city government for over 8 years. People can piss and moan all they want, but transparency isn't defined by what info is available on a website for inner web vigilantes. It just isn't, not matter how many times people exaggerate the situation.

Additionally, the original post is exaggerating as usual. The sheriff's office plainly says on their website which newspaper will be publishing the list, along with what day it will be printed. Seems easy enough to me and certainly not the 'needle in the haystack' the original post professes.

The next auction is May 18th, with the properties published by the philadelphia tribune on May 3rd and May 10th.

I've been following sheriff's sales for years. The website has always been a mess. Sometimes they will publish the sale, sometimes not. There are certain sales that aren't listed on the sheriff's website at all. The schedule of publishing in papers is often wrong too, I gave that up a long time ago. Best place to get the listings is the Legal Intelligencer. I'm not even sure if they are listed on the sheriff's website as publishing the sales, but its the only paper that consistently lists them.

Well imagine that! Good info. It is also interesting to note that they are online, and have pdfs available of the sales.

So much for 'needle in a haystack.'

loveisnoise is engaging in post-following due to another thread. I stuck him on ignore. Him and a couple others will turn 4-post threads into 5 pagers of OT derailment until they get tired or carpal tunnel sets in.

He'll reply to this post and put up some garbage in short order, I'm sure, or Sycamore.

Well, even with the PDF listings of the current sale, its still very difficult to find the listing of properties which are to be sold but have been postponed from previous sales. To the best of my knowledge the only way to get this list is via subscription service.

Maybe I'm going blind, but my web browser doesn't show any sales later than this past January at that link.

They stopped updating the site the same time they replaced the home page with that under construction notice.

That thing has been useless since Jewell Williams took over. I asked CityPaper to probe the Sheriff's Department to find out what's going on and what they plan to do with the site.

To be fair, he isn't defending. He is stating a fact. The fact is, the Sheriff is required to post them in newspapers.

Which does lead to a point. Maybe it is about time Council make it a legal requirement that they are all posted online as well.

Hmmm. Maybe it is also time for City Hall to audit all municipal websites to make sure domain name registries are owned by Philadlephia and not third parties.

The land bank bill is forcing online transparency in that realm for the inventory and transactions. Only makes sense to do it here, too.
