Lowering the rate to 0.44 percent, but broadening it to include nonprofit organizations, would boost the city's take from the tax from around $45 million to $50 million or $55 million, he said, solving the city's projected future shortfalls. That estimate suggests that nonprofit institutions would be paying $9 million to $14 million annually under the new scenario, but only some of that would be new money because of the lower rate for everyone.
