    Default resume writing service

Does anyone know of a local resume writing service? I've looked online but some are upwards of $300 so I'm wondering if anyone here has experience with this or can point me in the right direction. If I had $300 laying around I might not be looking for another job.

I was wondering if the employment office or chamber of commerce might provide this to people within the community. Couldn't really find anything on their websites.

    Any suggestions?

    I would PM MarketStreetEl

You're welcome, and yeah, you kind of did when you asked if anyone can point you in the right direction for writing a resume.

No offense, but resumes aren't that hard. List your job history, relevant experience and skills, keep it to one page, and make sure there aren't any spelling or grammar errors.

If you're unable to write one, even with all the free help available online, maybe you should set your sites on a job where you just fill out applications and don't need a resume.

    Default Not So Easy

A bare-bones resume may be easy, but a really good one takes time and thought. It's a sales document. You need to figure out what you want to do and what skills, knowledge, and experiences you can offer.

Try Integrity Career Transitions, in Wilmington, at 888-458-TEMP. Talk to Jennifer. She'll do a free consultation with no obligation to buy. (Full disclosure: I'm one of their rewriters, but I work for them because they, indeed, have integrity and won't take unfair advantage of you.)

The Free Library has free jobhunting sessions, including resume discussions, but I don't know anything about their quality. Ditto for Careerlink, the state employment service.

Do you have a colllege degree? Most colleges & universities have career services offices which offer services to alumni as well as students, including career counseling and resume review.

OP - there is some truth to this whether you like it or not. Simplicity usually wins. However I will say there is so much bad advice out there from "career experts" (who have probably never had a real job in 10+ years) that emphasize 'standing out from the crowd' that it can be tough for young/inexperienced people to know wtf knows what they're talking about.

I recently rewrote a resume for a friend of my mother's who paid like $500 to have it written. It was painful. Really, really painful. If someone passes you back something that is 2 pages or more, you better be a doctor.

In my MBA program we were told by career services, "If Jack Welch can fit his resume on one page, then so can you."

    I would second this suggestion.

I'm an award-winning writer and editor who has launched successful newspapers/newsletters at Penn and Widener.

I've written resumes for others on this board.

Why not get in touch with me and tell me what you need done?

Edited to add: Contrary to suggestions left here, though, two-page resumes are no crime, especially if you have enough experience or accomplishments to justify one. Anything longer, however, is a curriculum vitae, and only professors have those.

I charge much, much less, and I don't believe in inflicting pain on innocent job-seekers.

I can make/write your resume for you. I can do a great job and I always get complements on them.

i think it would be more accurate to say only people with graduate degrees have those. It is perfectly appropriate in my line of (non-professor) work for someone with a masters degree or (especially) a Ph.D. to have a Curriculum Vitae instead of a resume.

A federal-style resume can also easily exceed two pages, especially if you are a mid-career professional with a lot of expertise.

The one-page resume rule of thumb generally applies to entry-level positions.

I'm dealing with this issue now. I was just laid off a week back and I've been told that my 2 page resume was too concise and my 3 page resume was too long by different managers and recruiters whose opinions I sought. I've been working in I.T. for the past 14 years. I welcome constructive criticism of my resume.....
