    Default Sewer Line Insurance Coverage

Does anyone have any experience with additional insurance for sewer line problems. I'm buying an older home with alot of old cast iron pipes that...according to my plumber-will eventually need to be changed- and thought I'd look into this coverage.

I have insurance for both sewer and water service line. It came in handy when tree roots broke the water line. 100% covered repair.

Did the insurance company inspect your sewer and service lines at all when you purchased the policy?
Also, if you're comfortable doing so, could you tell me the name of the insurance company? I'd like to be able to suggest this to home buyers.

    Default Insurance riders

While I have never heard of this policy, and I just renewed my homeowners', check with your insurance carrier to see whether this is merely a rider to the main policy, such as a rider for extraordinary art, jewelry etc.

How much does this cost? I think one of the biggest worries is the sewer main. If that needs dug up and replaced cause it has a belly or it's full of tree roots it can be
pretty expensive. Does anyone know of areas where the "orangeburg" sewer lines were installed? That stuff is also worrisome.

Some companies will scope your line. Its probably a $300 or $400 though, but that might give you an indication of how good the waste lines are before
    commiting to insurance.

    Default "orangeburg" sewer lines

From personal experience that product has been found in circa 1954-56 houses.
So assume any 1950's construction, akin to the period of Aluminium wire; another bain of my house's design.

Thanks. Any circa for Terra Cotta versus Cast iron? or do they overlap?

I checked with my insurance carrier Allstate and also with Travelers-both said they don't offer it.
Nickledimer - would you mind giving me the name of your insurance carrier?
I did call one company but they only do single family properties. I have a duplex.

i have it through the water company for my property in jersey. has come in handy. i dont remember the exact numbers, but i seem to recall if i call them to come out to rotorooter once in 2 yrs it paid itself off. with an old home, that is easy. i had them clean a drain line and replace a corroded sewer vent stack pipe so far.

From Exterior Water and Sewer Lines to Electrical Wiring and HVAC Equipment, We've Got You Covered

AQUA PA partners with them and mails out their info. A neighbor with a similar aged home (1920s) recommended that we get it as it was worth it for them.

Of course, there's a condition in the policy that excludes pre-existing conditions. The contractor that they dispatch to do the repair will evaluate what caused the issue and whether it's covered. There is no inspection prior to the policy issuance.

As with any insurance coverage it's a rip off if you never encounter a loss that is covered. It's up to the consumer to decide if they would like to assume the risk themselves because the policy has too high of a premium or too many restrictions.

I opted against it because the city does give loans at a very reasonable rate for this, so I'd rather pay it back at a reasonable rate when it does happen (and no doubt eventually, it will) then risk overpaying in advance. Its a matter of choice, I think. There are of course both legit and sketchy agencies offering this insurance. The sketchy ones are the ones that seem to send me unsolicited mail all the time, it would seem.

If the so called Ins. Co. don't pay because they only have a PO box to collect your money What good is it? What a wonderful thing Google is. As a matter of fact I purchased 4 different warranties, only ONE made good on its promise.

If its pipes outside the home Aqua sells 2 policies for that. If you are talking about a sewer backup into the house some insurance companies offer coverage against it. Ours is an endorsement on the homeowners policy.
