Default Info on oil to gas conversion please. Worth the initial costs? Reliable contractors?

Until recently gas and oil prices were about the same. Now that gas is so much cheaper we are considering a change. We have no idea how much this would cost and if it would be worth it now or wait until we need to replace our oil burner. We have radiators - not baseboard heating. Thanks in advance.

There is a pretty good discussion on the subject here:

Whether or not you should upgrade now, depends on your personal situation. I have an older oil-fired boiler, that I'm going to run into the ground. We are trying to sell our house and if I spend the money to upgrade to a gas we probably won't be here long enough to realize the savings.

You'll more than likely end up putting in a new boiler for the new people. Anyone who buys a house with oil heat in Philly is either going to discount the price of the house by the price of the conversion or more likely requiring the seller to make the conversion.

The new equipment is so much more efficient than the old stuff that it just makes sense to upgrade; we're ripping out an oil boiler from 1967 on Friday that I just refuse to put another dime into. A few years ago when gas prices were insanely high - and oil prices too - I ripped out a new oil boiler and put in a high-efficiency gas boiler. It's been totally reliable since, and I don't regret it at all. As a matter of fact, I did it over the past few years on four buildings just about in a row. The difference in my fuel bills has been huge. I have one oil-fired boiler left where I pay for the fuel, and I think this will be its last season.

I can tell you that when we look at properties if they have oil burners we keep on walking.
