Default Extinguishing a patio fire pit

I got this really sharp patio fire pit yesterday. Read all the instructions and safety info. It's placed in just the right spot away from everything.
Fired it up and it was great!
It's time to call it a night and it's still smoking. No fire- just smoke.
I look at the owners manual again. No instructions on how to extinguish it.
One person tells me not to use water because it will ruin the bottom of the pit.
One person tells me don't use sand (which I had) because that too will damage the bottom of the pit. (Not sure how).

I didn't want to go in and leave it smoldering. So, I first put sand on it-but it continued to smoke. So, I put enough water on it to put it out.
I just went on the manufacturer's website-still no info on extinguishing it.

Does anyone have one of these? Tips?

Should have a mesh top to it for flying embers. Put the top on and let it burn out. It'll go out in a few hours. Otherwise, water. It's going to get rained on right?

Yes, it has a mesh top that I use while it's burning.
When it was smoldering, it was wafting across the street to my neighbor's house. They weren't sitting outside, but they usually are. If they had been, I think they would have been a little annoyed at the smoke billowing over to them due to the direction of the wind.. so from now on, I'm just going to use water to put it out.
I just thought it was odd that the owners manual and website says nothing about extinguishing it.

Two suggestions- first, keep some old ashes around in a small metal ash can, smother the fire in cold ashes to put it out.

Second, look for a metal 55 gallon truck lid - that should fit over the fire pit and smother the fire as well.

Great ideas, Hal! I wanted to smother it, but didn't have a solid lid. It's now on my list of things to get. Thanks!

This happened to me, but I was the recipient of the smoke. People rented the place next to me, first weekend I'm sitting at my 3rd floor office working and I smell smoke. Walking around the house it was smokey on 3rd and 2nd floors, not 1st though. I was freaking out that I had a smoldering electrical fire or something until I look out and seen the chiminea.

I asked them to either build a smokestack higher than my house or refrain from using in the backyard. I never seen it again, but my house smelled for a day or two and worse yet, my clothes. I was shocked at how much smoke was actually in the house.
