Default Talking Free Fruit/Veggie Garden Plots in Roxborough!

Talking Free Fruit/Veggie Garden Plots in Roxborough!

As you may know (or may have noticed!) that my finance and I purchased the rotting mansion also known as 429 Lyceum Ave last year. We are in the throes of extensive renovation; inside and out--it will take at least 3 years to get the place to where we'd like it to be : )

Nonetheless, the property has A LOT OF LAND. At this time we are only able to maintain, for ourselves, a 10 x 25 plot fruit and veg. lot as well as the front (12 x 60--mostly flowers) which leaves us with approx. room for 10 garden plots which measure approx. 10 x 10 each.

So, we are inviting are neighbors to a free plot garden plot. You can expect to have the plot this year and next (as the next 2+ years of indoor renovations are going to be long and tedious), and maybe longer depending on the renovations in general.

The only requirements are that you initially: (1) Turn over the soil, (2) organically fertilize the soil, and (3) maintain a water barrel (nothing fancy--a plastic garbage can with a screen and lid will do). Ongoing, you can maintain the plot as needed, water, harvest, etc..and check in monthly via e-mail (if it looks like someone has abandoned the plot, and does not respond to emails....the plot is up for grabs to someone else).

There will be organic composting spots available as well as a general weed dumping area available. Access to water (if one needs more than the rain barrels provide), and a trash will be available. Persons can come anytime they want....early, late, etc.. doesn't matter : ) Starbucks is in walking distance...(think Potties...!), or if we are home, you can use ours...

The plots are all FULL SUN.

The benefit is that for the next couple of years, we do not have to think about unused space that people could be using for food or flowers, our soil will be enriched, we're helping our community, we will meet our neighbors and make new friends!

If interested, please email Kevin or I at: Melinda.Jaeb@gmail.com, KevinHahnKeith@gmail.com, or stop by the house and take a look. : )

I'm hoping this will be a fun project and we will get to meet all of our neighbors. Prior, I lived on Ripka Street for 10+ years, and had a fabulous relationship with my neighbors and fellow Gardner. It seems such a waste to let all of this green space go unused....

    Thanks, and Cheers,
    Melinda and Kevin

Great idea, sadly I'm down in Bella Vista or I would take you up on the offer of a plot...I just don't think it would be very "green" for me to commute to a garden plot.

One thought, you may need to beef up you homeowners insurance in case someone gets hurt on you property. With 10 plots you could easily have 20 adults + kiddos running around on your land with spades, shovels, shears...
