Default Moving cable jacks / outlets

Does anyone have experience with moving or installing a new cable outlet in your house? The outlet on the first is in kind of a dumb spot and my wife and I want to put one on a different wall. I realize you can do it yourself if you're handy, but I'm not particularly handy so yeah. Is there someone not too expensive you can hire to do it? Or does anyone have experience with having Verizon do it during an installation of FIOS? Thanks!

I had Verizon install in a new location and I'd advise against it if you can. I already had a hole in the exterior from a previous cable line that I filled with caulk. I told this to the installer and he told me that he needs a bigger hole. I questioned that since its the same size line. Well he pulls out this giant drill with a 1-1/2" bit, I protest again, saying he should drill in from the outside in the least so he doesn't mess up my brick, he says he has to do this. This loser puts the drill against my baseboard, presses the power and the damn thing jumps and goes skipping down my brand new freshly painted skimcoated wall. MF'er.

In the end he drilled the hole at the very top of the baseboard. I can't even put a cover over the damn thing to make it look nice. Oh yeah, his hand prints all over my new walls were great too.

Verizon FIOS installers can locate new RG6 ports for you (COAX) if you ask. The answer will depend on how far away from the closest COAX port you want your new port to go. If it's just relocating along the same wall I don't see much of a problem. If it's a different room or a different floor... they probably won't. They don't really carry sheetrock and joint compound with them.

It all depends on what is behind your walls. If you have plaster stuck on to lattice, the answer is no unless you want one of those ugly box outlets with a hole punched through your floor. Through modern sheetrock and wood framing it's easier to cut through.

If Verizon is unable to do it---do what I did when I wanted CAT6-A run through my entire house: contract an electrician. Many electricians also do data and TV. They have to do the same crap they would normally do if you wanted to run a new outlet, and they will cut the holes in your walls to run the line across and then put up the joint compound to cover it over.

You will have to repaint your walls yourself (or hire someone to repaint).

If you have other stuff you want moved... like a new outlet, data ports, etc... I would save up and have it all done in one job. It's easier on your sanity to just have your walls destroyed the one time rather than going back multiple times every time you change your mind.

A lot of times your provider will move the outlet for you. Cable is relatively easy, compared to electricity. However, if you have no attic access, you can utilize the crawl space. There are a lot of different techniques for doing this, but if you are not comfortable, I would hire a professional. I always evaluate the project before tackling it myself. Is there an easy way for you to access the space that you need to complete a project like this. Does it require any specialized tools or knowledge. You would be surprised what you can complete yourself! Good luck!

Again a caution about using your cable provider. They are there to get done quickly and out. That means drilling wherever and however to get it done quickly.

In the end how you do it will depend entirely on what's in your walls. Lots of people just run the wire outside of their house because it's easier and they don't mind out ugly it looks, I guess.
