So forgive my ignorance, please - where did this elevated train line go? Did it connect to the Frankford Line? and how far south on Delaware Ave did it go?
I think it was the downtown subway system from west Philly and it came above ground around Front Street going north a short distance and wrapped itself around Arch Street onto Delaware Ave going south for a few blocks - a commuter drop off point with streetcars as termination point, to the ferries and the Jersey suburbs. Have not read anything on it but have gotten that much from seeing dozens of photos etc. It eventually got turned into the Frankford Elevated extension uptown to the growing Northeast and by that time with the Ben Franklin/Delaware River Bridge built, the ferries started a slow decline up until the early fifties.
Here is a photo of the old Delaware Avenue elevated line going to the ferry terminals as far as South street.
Market Franford Line
Extensions took the subway east to 2nd Street on August 3, 1908,[6] and via a portal at 2nd street and several elevated curves it reached the Delaware River between Market Street and Chestnut Street on September 7, 1908.[6] The Delaware Avenue Elevated (also called the Ferry Line, because of the multiple ferries across the river) opened on October 4, 1908,[6] as a further extension south along the river to South Street. The only two stations on this extension were Market–Chestnut and South Street.[6]
Some of the photos labeled below with "PRJ". Don't know what it stands for.
