It is erected from the purest Roman marble, from a design by Mr. Strickland, the well-known architect of the city. The weaver need not be told the, 'The Exchange,' is the place where, 'the merchants most do congregate.'"

The principal entrance to the east will bear the slope of the lot, immediately opposite the centre building. This entrance forms the termination of an avenue leading from the city.

You can find a lot on this by googling it, presently it is the Acme supermarket, and if you walk along the side of the bank, and behind the acme, some of the original stone prison walls are still there.

re: Eastern State Prison - I believe it was originally called Cherry Hill Prison for the farm that stood there prior to its erection.

Brown st west of 4th st, north side. Three red brick buildings are viewed from the opposite side of Brown Street. To the left is a five-storey red brick building, a livery stable, with an entrance large enough for carriages. A carriage and horse are lightly sketched inside. Next right is a red brick building of smaller dimensions. It is the three and one-half storey Zoar M. E. Church. The stone above the third floor is inscribed: "Zoar M. E. Church, Founded 1791, Rebuilt 1838." The building carries a "For Sale" sign over the green front door. This was an African-American congregation. The church sits behind a low wrought iron fence. Next right is a substantial three-storey red brick building housing "C. W. Kramer's Light Carriage & Wagons." A workman in an apron stands at the door. There are three pedestrians; a gas lamp curbside; and several bare trees both in the churchyard and at the curb.Brown Street above 4th Street

A few hand drawn, birds-eye-view maps of philadelphia from late 19th c. Maps are interactive.

philadelphia - the BIG Map Blog

And you've got to check out the Centennial Exposition map. You can zoom way in and still see the Ohio house. The detail is incredible.

Front and Master Streets, Philadelphia, Pa.

The two-storey Commissioners Hall with cupola is the central feature of this scene. The edifice bears "For Sale" signs and also across the front signs advertising "First Grand FAIR Schuyler Post 51 GAR [Grand Army of the Republic] Aid of Decoration Day." The building sits in a park-like setting and is surrounded by building materials, including large and small pipes. In the distant background to the left and right are other large red brick buildings and a horsecar. The car is headed for Richmond. There are two small covered sheds on wheels bearing signs "3 Dist." Two workmen are in the scene and several women including one with a child. The seven trees are bare of leaves. The red brick sidewalk is trimmed with stone curbing. Large flat stone slabs mark the crosswalks. .Front and Master Streets
