Great photo! But they should have left the name of the street as Blight St., given the condition of it now!
See 408 Watts Street, Philadelphia, PA - Google Maps - and it looks like the photo was taken on a particularly GOOD day!
Look at the top of the building in the middle of the block east side a Broad St subway sub station. A deco gem stuffed up that little street .

I walk up this street just to see it.

Yes, unfortunately, neither Mrs. Lyster's house nor that section of Darien St. are still with us. Pitt was referring to another old house, two blocks away, on the north side of Vine St., with still stands alone and abandoned. Probably some one was unable to obtain the title to the building in order to knock it down for a parking lot, like the rest of the block.

Default South Side of Callowhill Street West of 13th Street. 8/24/1894

On Aug 17, 1894, murderer H.H. Holmes and his partner Ben Pitezel set up a phony patent office at 1316 Callowhill St. There's now a parking lot that stretches the length of the block. Across the street, where the sturdy North American Building resides, there used to be a station for the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad.

I wonder if it was taken on purpose or did they just capture a creepy moment in time by chance?

You can see the sign for the phony patent office.

I'm betting it was done temporarily, in preparation for the construction of the southern part of the Broad St Line. The Snyder Ave station didn't open until 1938, and that photo is dated 1931.

How funny! I just saw another old picture of this bar (in roughly the same era) come up at auction up in Port Richmond. I knew it had to be from that area, but I'd never seen the bar before. Now i wish I'd bid on it!

Before Prohibition, there was no limit on breweries owning bars. I'm guessing that what we're seeing here is a Schmidt-owned bar?

Good eye Mr Morley I didn't notice the statue kinda blends in with the LuLu arches.
The building on the left with the dome is pretty cool too .

A link about the LuLu Temple.

Funny, somewhere along the line, I did some research on that building (it might have been while I was working on the Baldwin photos). It was the Spring Garden Institute, not unlike the Drexel Institute or Franklin Institute at the time: Spring Garden College » History
