    Default Toppi Stadium South Philly - Broad & Packer -1948 - 1954

Toppi Stadium was an outdoor arena of intimate proportions. It was a large outdoor boxing club really. Five-thousand seats. A bricked-in plot roughly the size of a football field . The photo shows a South Philly crowd mostly in short sleeves presumably on a warm summer night. Toppi Stadium staged its first boxing show on July 15, 1948. And for six years it was a treasure for local boxing fans. Forty-six fight cards played out through 1953 in the open air of Packer Park between June and September. By 1954, Toppi Stadium was history.

I used to live a few blocks away saw them tear it down too bad. We figured great were getting a new hospital that didn't last long.

Interesting. Never knew there was such a place. Thanks for sharing.

Just to clarify and I wasn't privy to Archdiocese's collecting and warehousing policy, but sacred items like altar stones, relics, are and have been collected and maintained by the Archdiocese at PAHRC. Art work, depending on it's association with the Archdiocese, has been collected and some of it has been sold. Other pieces have been placed in other churches in the Archdiocese and outside of the Archdiocese.
Goodnight Rossana Arquette whereever you are.

As I said it was the early 70s - since the 90s they've developed a different way of dealign with such things.
