Where do you put this flagpole? Third and New? Tradition of big flagpoles in that neighborhood.

    PhillyHistory - Preservation
It's funny you mention this, I actually applied to be an intern for these guys when I was still in college. I still remember the interview.

I didn't have any background in historical preservation or photography or anything of the sort. The woman interviewing me asked why, in light of those facts, that I wanted the job (which paid next to nothing). I said I was interested in city history and believed in the project (and the larger aim of preservation efforts). She smiled understandingly and informed me that working in dusty archives for eight hours a day doing highly repetitive tasks like prepping and scanning photos was, in her opinion, one of the most grueling, mind-destroying tasks she could imagine, and that I had better be really, really good at forcing myself to zone out if I was going to last more than a week. She said they mostly sought people who were aiming to be librarians or data analysts. And also, was I sure I didn't have any dust allergies? She assured me I'd develop them over time anyway, but it was worse starting out if you already had them.

This isn't quite verbatim, but it's pretty close to how she phrased it. I thanked her for her honesty and took another internship slot I'd been offered at the Commerce Department. True heros indeed.
