Default Children Taking Fewer Antibiotics, More ADHD Drugs & birth control

A study by the Food and Drug Administration found that children are taking fewer antibiotics now than 10 years ago.

After analyzing prescription drug databases, researchers can also say that the use of birth control and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder medication rose over the last decade.

Contraceptive prescriptions jumped 93 percent and prescriptions for ADHD drugs rose 46 percent from 2002 to 2010.

not surprised about the birth control and ADHD Rx's.
Anti-biotics you have to be careful with because they can do more harm then good.
I think recently Z-pacs were suggested as being bad for you now.

    ADHD rx's are scam.

of course ritalin is not always the answer, i never said nor suggested it was.

i was just addressing your ridiculous blanket statement re: adhd rx's. there is certainly a legitimate concern about over-prescribing, but to dismiss them all as a scam is ignorant. i know several people, some children, some adults for whom being diagnosed with ADHD and receiving proper treatment, which may or may not include prescription medication, was life-changing.

Azithromycin is just ineffective for most infections.

    Onto ADD drugs:

As a Focalin user, I guarantee that the benefits are real for those who need it. I wouldn't be quick to blame the drug for lazy diagnosticians nor would I be quick to suggest that doctors are getting major kickbacks for making certain prescriptions. Laws are pretty strict about that (God forbid we have some regulation here). Doctors are inundated with patients right now and if they lie about their symptoms, there's not an effective way to tell if these drugs are actually needed.

Contraceptives: Is this a bad thing? We've found very positive benefits in recent years from contraceptive use that have nothing to do with preventing pregnancy and everything to do with protecting health and raising QOL.

But the jury is still not out completely about some birth control being linked to breast cancer?

some studies have shown a slight increased risk with oral contraceptives. the risk returns to normal 5 years after cessation of the drug. some studies have also shown a decreased risk for ovarian and endometrial cancers. the survival rate for ovarian cancer is lower than that of breast cancer. in these cancers, the longer you take the hbc, the more protective it is. the protection also appears to last for 10 years after the pill is stopped.

Side effect of the internet - any person with no intellect and profound ignorance can now reach hundreds or thousands if they're motivated enough to spread their misinformation like a virus.

While I think caution should be used in diagnosing children as hyperactive and prescribing drugs, I have seen the benefits many, many times. For a truly hyperactive child, the correct meds in the correct dosage can be almost miraculous. And lack of them cause for manslaughter.

When I was a teenager, two of my friends took birth control pills for severe cystic acne. Their condition was serious and not due to failing to wash their face, believe me. I don't think either of them became promiscuous- one of them has been a nun for almost 40 years.

Pharmaceutical companies have a goal of getting as many Americans on prescription drugs as possible, all for profit.

What children really need are two good parents at home that are moral, ethical, and treat each other well, healthy food (especially a good percentage raw foods), to turn off the TV, and to be immersed in time occupying educational activities.

The breakdown of the family and lack of proper nutrition are two major causes for the behavioral issues American children have.
