i signed up for this (Free) email program and have found it very helpful.

i definitely agree with the adding weight training, though i alternate mine...i do cardio one day and weight/resistance training the next. i take one day a week off (just take a nice casual walk).

do you have netflix? there are some pretty good workouts on there. i don't do dancy dance stuff, not coordinated enough, but i like the 10 minute solutions stuff and a few other videos.

i also highly recommend a set of resistance bands. for my non-running days i alternate between resistance bands, kettlebell and light dumbells.

oh, and youtube. i have found some good workouts on you tube!

six months ago i NEVER exercised. Now i do it daily. i still hate it but once i started seeing real results the motivation to stick with it kicked in. one days i'm really not wanting to do it i get on the treadmill and commit to 10 minutes or commit to doing one ten minute video. once i get started i usually do more, but sometimes i do stop after 10 and that's just fine too.
This is a great thread. I have a question to add, aside from normal workout routines has anyone tried bee pollen???

I have two friends that both went on bee pollen about a year ago and shed 10-15 pounds VERY fast. although, after a year one of the friends has started to realize it's not working like it used to and thinks she's gaining most of the weight back. I would like to try it but at the same time, i don't know if it's worth it. I exercise regularly twice a week but try to get it up to three or four every now and then, i'm a tiny person but bee pollen seems like it's helped people i know in the past, so i'm intrigued. I also feel like it could be bad for your health to though, like most dietary supplement pills can be.

    i'm torn! opinions welcomed.

i do not generally use supplements. i'm sure some of them probably do work, but my concern is the lack of regulation. as a toxicologist i've read more than my fair share of articles on analysis of vitamins and supplements and the results can be very scary. heavy metals, ingredients in much different concentrations than it says on the label, and sometimes prescription drugs!

I personally would avoid most supplements. Daily I take vitamins and fish oil. They have proven medical benefit, through numerous studies and experiments. I also know of the potential side effects and interactions, as well as a max dose. This type of information lacks for most supplements. It makes me very cautious to take many supplements.

When it comes to weight loss supplements, you have to take anecdotal evidence with a grain of salt. It may sound like your friends have lost weight on bee pollen, but most people tend to pursue weight loss supplements as an aid to weight loss--not the sole method for weight loss. So they may have increased their exercise and made dietary changes in addition to bee pollen.

How would I go about finding out if a supplement (a protein powder mix) has any heavy metals or anything else to be concerned with?

there's really no way they fall under the category of supplement and thus there are no controls in place to regulate their contents. you can try googling the name and FDA to see if there have been any reports made. but batch to batch they could vary dramatically.

How about some heavy metals with that protein drink?

Thanks. I was afraid that would be the case.

In the last ten months, I've lost 40 pounds. I did it by including some lean protein at every meal- even if it's just a little bit of low-fat cheese, really limiting fats, and revamping my whole approach to carbs. I probably eat 40-50% of the number of carbs I used to eat. What remaining carbs I do eat are the whole grain variety. I also do Joyce Verdral's weight training program. It's a slow loss but I haven't gained at all in the 10 months, even when I've slipped a bit.

Funny thing is, I wanted to lose weight to get off blood pressure medicine. Before the weight loss, I needed one pill. Now I need two. Guess I just have high blood pressure. Cholesterol is down to 150 from 175.

Maybe Johns Hopkins or Harvard should do a study on me and try to find out why people like me cannot ever be overweight no matter what we do. I can be very muscular but my body does not like to have much bodyfat.

Vegetables are mostly complex carbs while fruits are mostly simple carbs. Although avocados are mostly fat. But people have this idea that grains are the only complex carbs.

Here is Harvard plate versus USDA plate. So you have to choose who to side with-- the USDA or Harvard. Harvard emphasizes much more that the holy grains are much better for your health than the the unholy grains. You did not indicate your stand on that.

Now either Harvard is factually wrong here or it was changed and they are out of date. Yes I am saying that Harvard is wrong. Harvard says: (Healthy Eating Plate vs. USDA's MyPlate - Healthy Eating Plate - The Nutrition Source - Harvard School of Public Health):

MyPlate does not tell consumers that whole grains are better for health.
USDA says: (USDA's MyPlate - Home page):

Make at least half your grains whole grains.
That means 50% minimum and no maximum. So that is very close to saying that it is healthier.

Couldn't agree more, as putting fitness first is what I finally learned was the key for me personally to take it off and keep it off.

I am not an expert, but I think that 1500 calories is probably too little, even if what you're eating is mostly good for you. You might be actually slowing down your metabolism by overly restricting. Does your insurance cover a visit to a nutritionist?

I started using a Fitbit pedometer, which has really been effective in inspiring me to put in at least 10K steps a day. The old nerd that I am, I get really charged on days I go to the gym and it hovers near 20K. This has been the best fitness-device investment I've ever made.

the trick is the motivation. i'd say join a gym and make a good plan of your meals. and make exercising your priority.

Totally agree; at least this is what works for me. Once I started concentrating on physical fitness, I started making better food choices.
