I've been hearing for a few weeks that Ackerman was in hospice, but could find nothing on the internet including The Notebook about it. This confirms the rumors.

Apparently she had pancreatic cancer. It's particularly deadly, killing most patients in the first year. When my husband had it, I said I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. Guess I have to live up to that now.

I will say I'd rather die poor and leave people with good memories.

Exactly; it's not about wishing a death or reveling in someone dying, but it is really hard to work up much sympathy over her.

You won't find a lot of sympathy from this corner, either, except maybe for those in her immediate family who, I'm sure, had a fuller picture of her virtues as a person than we Philly taxpayers. Her legacy should be assessed all for the damage it did to the school district. All I'm saying is, even if you do see her passing as some direct result of karma or poetic justice, it's not going to do much to undo the damage.
